When the manhood of our race Brings to bear the timely blow, Gathers rank by rank to face W ith a quiet breast the foe,— Gathers with untroubled soul, Witness to an Empire’s pride, Crossing seas whose waters roll To unite us, not divide,— Gathers from that island patch We call Home, the parent nest, Filling places in a match Which will prove indeed the Test,— In the trenches some will nurse Memories of cricket’s call : W ill they quit themselves the worse For their skill of bat and ball ? Let the battlefields reveal, W ith their tale of glorious stands— Blade of willow, blade of steel, Both fit well to British hands ! C. P l a i r r e .
