Cricket 1914
480 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. N o v e m b e r , 19 14 . Norfolk at Cambridge, in which 1036 were registered for the full 40 wickets. In 1913 there were nine four-figure aggregates. As in 1913 C. H. Titchmarsh heads the batting averages (that is, of those who played in any considerable number of innings), and E. S. Household, N. V. H. Riches, Silverlock, M. Falcon, and S. G. Etheridge are again well up in the table. Many names disappear, some of them owing to the small number of matches played by several counties. Cheshire played as many as 31 men ; Cambs 29 ; Kent II and Suffolk each 28 ; Durham, Essex II, and Lincolnshire each 26 ; Glamorgan 25 ; Northumberland 24 ; Monmouth, Norfolk, Staffordshire, and Surrey II each 23 ; Beds 22 ; Berks 20 ; Herts and Wilts each 19 ; Cornwall 18 ; Devon 16 ; Dorset 15 ; and Bucks 13. W ith the 100 or so who played for M.C.C., for Yorkshire II, for Lancashire II. and in the two or three other matches included outside the championship programme, the total of men engaged in the 82 matches approached 600. There were 216 first-class matches last season, and in these 486 men took part. The figures of all were given last month ; but a similar comprehensive treatment cannot well be accorded to the second-class players, and only a selection of the principal among them is offered here.
