On bowling figures : —(1) Yorkshire ; (2) Kent ; (3) Warwick shire ; (4) Derbyshire ; (5) Hants ; (6) Northants ; (7) Surrey ; (8) Middlesex ; (9) Leicestershire ; (10) Notts ; (11) Somerset ; (12) Essex ; (13) Sussex ; (14) Lancashire ; (15) Gloucestershire ; (16) Worcestershire. The application of the so-called “ figure of merit " system in its best form (i.e., the division of the average per wicket for by that against) gives order and figures thus :— (1) Middlesex (140) ; (2) Surrey (132-9) ; (3) Yorkshire (132*2) ; (4) Kent (128) ; (5) Essex (103-8) ; (6) Sussex (103) ; (7) Hants (114) ; (8) Notts (112) ; (9) Northants (110-5) ; (10) Warwickshire (no) ; (11) Leicestershire (90) ; (12) Derbyshire (87) ; (13) Lancashire (84) ; (14) Somerset (61) ; (15) Worcestershire (57) ; (16) Gloucester shire (55). The figures in brackets, obtained by the method referred to, give in each case the number of runs which (on results obtained) each side was worth for each 100 scored by its opponents. Thus Middlesex may be reckoned as having scored 149 to each 100 against, Gloucestershire 55 to each 100 against. Perhaps this will be more readily understood il the figures in one case are set out mathematically, thus :— Middlesex totalled 8655 runs for 250 wickets, average 34-6 ; her opponents 8208 for 353, average 23-2. 346 8633 — = 1-49 or q —— q 232 * 8208 SYNOPSIS OF SCORING IN A LL FIRST-CLASS MATCHES. . 1*49- F or .
