Cricket 1914
O c t o b e r , 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 465 each. Last year the total was 473 ; playing in 10 or more innings, 242 ; appearing in only one match, 85. Four of the 486 totalled over 2000 runs, 9 between 1500 and 2000, and 43 between 1000 and 1500. Fifty-six others totalled 500 or more but under 1000. It is a curious coincidence that the same number— 112— iaggregated 500 or more last year, and that then, as this time, the 112 were equally divided into those scoring 1000 or more and those scoring 500 or more but under 1000. Ninety-nine of the 486 reached three figures on at least one occasion. Last year there were only 98 ; but the total of cen turies was 223, as against 204 this. Of the 486 as many as 323 bowled. Eighteen took 100 wickets or more (as against 17 last year) ; 35 took 50 or more wickets but under 100. Of the 198 who bowled but did not reach the ten wickets mark 67 failed to take a wicket at all. No one effected 100 dismissals this season, as Huish did in 1913. The Kent stumper headed the list then, Dolphin coming second ; this time they exchange places. Last year 129 players effected 10 or more dismissals (catches and stumpings) each ; the number for 1914 is 125. The table which follows includes all first-class matches, not county championship games only. Players County. Matches taking Men who played in every match, played, part. Hearne, Hendren, Tarrant, Buswell, Haywood, Thompson, Claude Woolley, George Gunn, Iremonger, Lee, Robson, Hobbs, Vine, Charlesworth, Jeeves, Pearson, and Wilson. Of the 21 thirteen were in the list for 1912—Slater, Parker, C. J. B. Wood, Hendren, Buswell, Haywood, Thompson, George Gunn, Iremonger, Robson, Vine, Charlesworth, and Wilson. Getting back to 1911, we find only four (Buswell, Haywood, Vine, and Charlesworth) of the 13 in the list. In 1910 the number drops to two—Vine and Charlesworth. Both are there in 1909, 1908, 1907, and 1906. Charlesworth drops out with 1905 ; but one has to go back to 1900 to find Vine absent from a Sussex match. Surrey claim 8 of the 55 big totals ; Kent, Sussex, and Yorkshire 6 each ; Notts 4 ; Hants; Leicestershire, Middlesex, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire 3 each ; Derbyshire, Essex, Lancashire, and Northants 2 each. No such total was made by Gloucestershire, Somerset, Cambridge University, or the M.C.C. Essex, Lancashire, Worcestershire, and Yorkshire each had 6 of the 55 registered against them ; Kent and Sussex each 4 ; Hants 3 ; Leicestershire, Middlesex, Northants, and Notts each 2 ; Warwickshire onjy one. No such total was registered against Derbyshire, Surrey, or Cambridge University. SMALL SCORING. The lowest completed innings of the season were :— 31 by Derbyshire v. Essex, at Derby. 34 by Gloucestershire v. Hants, at Bristol. 38 by Somerset v. Hants, at Bath. 39 by M.C.C. v. Yorkshire, at Lord’s. 44 by Somerset v. Yorkshire, at Weston-super-Mare. 47 by Sussex v. Essex, at Southend-on-Sea. 50 by Sussex v. Middlesex, at Lord’s. There were 50 others of between 50 and 100, making 57 in all (ex clusive of innings declared) in which a total of three figures was not reached. These 57 were thus divided :— There were 54 totals of 400 and over in 1913, including 16 of 500 or more. This year there were 55 of 400 and over, of which 16 passed the 500 mark. In each season there was one of over 600. The curious similarity of these figures is noteworthy. TOTALS OF 400 OR MORE. W ’lftQ T’l. * For, Against, Place, and Date. 645 7 * Warwickshire v.
