At Lord’s, August 27 and 28. With Kent much more nearly at full strength—Hubble has not been in the best of health lately, and needs a rest—than Middlesex, the metropolitan county yet won this match by a big margin. They were on top practically throughout, from the time J. W. Hearne was missed at 19, and went on to make a century (reaching his 2000 for the season meanwhile) in an innings wherein no one else reached 20. Hearne batted 3^ hours, and had a second life at 95, but played great cricket. Hardinge batted equally well for Kent, making his 58 in 95 minutes ; but he had even poorer support than Hearne received. In Middlesex’s second innings nearly everybody did something, Hebden and Kidd adding 57 for the seventh wicket after 6 had fallen for 135, and J. T. Hearne (o*) assisting in a last wicket stand of 36 in 25 minutes with Murrell, who hit most powerfully. Except for Woolley the Kentish batsmen failed dismally in their second innings, Haig and the two Hearnes bowling with great effect. The veteran J. T. had 9 for 68 in the match—his best perform ance of the season. Middlesex won by 298 runs. M i d d l e s e x . First Innings. Tarrant, lbw, b Blythe .. .. 16 Lee (H. At Weston-super-Mare, August 27 and 28. Somerset had a very weak team, and on a bowlers’ wicket they were hopelessly outclassed. Only one man reached 20 in either of their innings. Denton made his 52 without a chance ; but Drake, who scored 51, was badly missed at 5. He and Booth bowled unchanged through both innings of Somerset, and in the second Drake accomplished the great feat of taking all 10 wickets. He had 15 for 51 in the match, which York shire won by 140 runs. Bridges and Robson bowled well for the losers. Y o r k s h i r e . First Innings. A subscription is being raised by his friends—“ to display their appreciation of his splendid character,” as Messrs. C. W. Nodrum and S. McMichael, who make the appeal, put it. May it prove a bumper ! WARWICKSHIRE v. SURREY. At Edgbaston, August 27, 28, and 29. Runs were never easy to make in this match, though a great partnership of 112 in 95 minutes by Frank Foster and Quaife gave Warwickshire an early advantage which they maintained practically throughout. They were together 95 minutes, and Foster made his splendid 81 in only a trifle over 2 hrs. Quaife batted hrs. for his equally meritorious 60. Donald Knight’s dogged 33, for which he batted 105 minutes, was the best feature of the Surrey first innings. In Warwickshire’s second Kinnear and Quaife (who reached his 1000 runs early in his innings) added 45 for the third wicket ; Baker pjayed well, and Jeeves hit a couple of sixes. Langley was called away by military necessities, adding another to the long roll of those whom first-class cricket has given to the Army, a roll that will be far longer yet. Surrey needed 211 for victory, and, though they had lost Hobbs, Hayward, and Knight for 81 on Friday evening, looked to have at least a decent chance on Saturday. But the outstanding wickets added only 49, and they were beaten by 80 runs. Foster bowled in great fettle, and had 9 for 72 in the match ; Jeeves, Rushby, and Razor Smith also did good work with the ball.
