At the Saffrons, Eastbourne, August 24 and 25. Worcestershire made a very poor show in this match. Pearson carried his bat through the first innings, playing good and sound cricket, and Burrows, going on with two fingers of his bowling hand strapped together, met with unexpected success ; but the rest did practically nothing. Jupp had a great match, scoring 84 without a chance in 2f hrs., with 10 fours, and taking 9 wickets for 61 ; Albert Relf helped him to add 88, and Maurice Jewell (who is expected to play for Worcestershire next year, but apparently has a Sussex residential qualification at present) made an excellent 50 of 102 put on with him for the fifth wicket. Vincett, who had bowled wrell in the visitors’ first, hit up 38. Sussex won by an innings and 79 runs. First Innings. W o r c e s t e r s h i r e . Second Innings. Bow'ley (F. The home side were completely outclassed in this match. Booth and Drake bow'led unchanged through both their innings. Kilner and Rhodes added 95 for York shire’s fourth wicket, and Kilner and Holmes 117 in 45 minutes for the sixth. Holmes made his 61 in 100 minutes ; and Kilner, though twice missed during the first half of his innings, played brilliantly for his 169 (28 fours), made in 205 minutes. Yorkshire won by an innings and 227 runs. Dolphin caught 4 and stumped 1 in Gloucestershire’s second. G l o u c e s t e r s h i r e . First Innings. Langdon, b Booth Dipper, b Drake F. B. WARWICKSHIRE. At Gravesend, August 24 and 25. In the absence of Hardinge, slightly unwell, Kent gave a trial to G. W. E. Whitehead, the Clifton College captain. Each side got through an innings on the first day, and Warwickshire owed their slight advantage mainly to a hard- hit 61 by Jeeves, w'ho slammed 2 sixes and 8 fours in the course of a 50 minutes’ stay. He and Hands added 59 in 25 minutes. On the Tuesday Kent had 3 down for 28 ; but Humphreys and Day made a fine stand of 114 for the fourth wicket, and from that point the home side were always on top. The pro. made his 73 (one six, 11 fours) in 95 minutes, the amateur his 57 (one six, 7 fours) in 90. Foster bowled well, and'in the match had 9 for 103. Warwickshire needed 199 for victory. Fielder got their first 4 wrickets at a cost of only 10 runs, and 5 were down for 19. Baker, who completed his iooo runs, stayed in an hour ; but the rest could do nothing w’ith Woolley, and Kent won by 99 runs. Throughout the wicket favoured the bowlers, and the displays of Day and Humphreys deserve all the more credit for that fact, of course. K e n t . First Innings. Humphreys, c Quaife, b Foster .. 2 G.
