Cricket 1914
450 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. S e p t e m b e r , 1914. At Bradford, August 17, 18, and 19. The home side played a wholly professional team, and H. L. Wilson was the only amateur appearing for Sussex, who included George Leach for the first time since 1912. Yorkshire lost 2 for 10 ; but then Wilson and Kilner (who completed his iooo for the season during his innings) added n o in 90 minutes, and Wilson and Rhodes stayed together for the rest of the day, putting on 266 unparted. Only 5 were added on the Tuesday. The resultant 271 is a fourth wicket record for Yorkshire. Wilson batted 5^ hrs. for 208, his highest score in big cricket. Rhodes and he each gave three chances. Wilson hit 25 fours, Rhodes 9. The remaining wickets fell fast, Vincett proving very successful ; and Yorkshire, 386 for 3 over night, were all out for 443. Sussex failed dismally. Relf and Wilson added 66 for the fourth wicket in their first innings, and in the follow- on Vine batted well ; but in general the display given was very poor. Booth had 9 for 99 in the match, and Dolphin made 6 catches. York shire won by an innings and 183 runs. Y o r k s h i r e . YORKSHIRE v. SUSSEX. Wilson (B. A very one-sided match, in which the only Somerset players to distinguish themselves were Braund, Hyman, Hylton-Stewart and Banes-Walker. In the first innings Hyman and Hylton-Stewart added 61 for the third wicket, and the ex-schoolmaster and Banes-Walker 50 for the sixth. In the second Braund batted 3! hours for his 115, with only one chance (at 49), and hit 11 fours. Hyman helped him to add 76 for the second wicket, and Hylton-Stewart 78 for the third. For Hampshire Mead played a splendid chanceless innings of 158 in 3^ hours, hitting 24 fours ; Newman made his first century in big cricket, batting 190 minutes, and hitting 12 fours ; and Arnold’s 76 included 8 fours. Mead and Arnold added 152 together. McLeod (Felsted) showed good form for his 27. Mead reached his 2000 runs for the season during his innings. Newman in Somerset’s first bowled effectively, and McDonell was even more deadly in their second, taking his 7 wickets for only 18 runs after lunch. Hants won by an innings and 47 runs. Hearne and Hendren for the home side’s third wicket was the outstanding feature of the first day’s play. They added 176 in 2 hours. Hearne took 95 minutes to reach 50, but got to his century in another 40 minutes. He gave no chance, and hit 15 fours. Hendren batted 2\ hours for his capital 88 (8 fours). Notts were 82 for 4 at close of play. They did not show up well onthe Tuesday, thebest stands being 51 by John Gunnand Payton and 52 by Payton and Whysall.Tarrant left at 38 when Middlesex batted again : then followed stands of 73 by Hearne and Lee and 183 by Lee and Hendren. The colt, out to the last ball of the day, batted 3^ hours for his 139 (his first century, and indeed first score of over 50, in big cricket), gave no actual chance, and made some powerful drives, 14 fours being included in his total. Hendren, 88* at close of play, received little support on Wednesday, but took his score to 133 before the innings wa; declared. He batted just on 3 hours, and hit a five and 13 fours. Set 457 for victory, Notts never looked like getting the runs ; but Lee plaved a good innings of 52, and several others made a few. Middlesex won by 239 runs. M i d d l e s e x . First Innings.
