S e p t e m b e r , 19x4. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 449 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. SURREY. At Cheltenham, August 17 and 18. On the first day’s play there was little apparent advantage to either side, Surrey losing 3 for 76 in reply to the home team’s 182. Sewell, going in as late as No. 9, made top score for his side. On Tuesday Surrey asserted themselves in unmistakable fashion. They had 5 down for 81 ; but Ducat and Knight added 130 in 90 minutes, and Hitch rattled up 50 in 35. The pitch wore badly, and there was some excuse for Gloucestershire’s failure in the second innings, when Sewell hit up 48 out of 63 in 40 minutes. A slight extension of time enabled the game to be finished on the second day, Surrey winning by an innings and 25 runs. G l o u c e s t e r s h i r e . First Innings. Second Innings. The first match ever played by Derbyshire at Burton (which is only partially within the county boundaries). The condition of affairs did not afford a fair test of the likelihood of good gates there ; attendances at this match were very small. Leicestershire batted the whole of the first day, making 338 for 8. Cecil Wood was out a few minutes before time after making 147 in 4f hours with only one chance (at 44). He hit 14 fours, and with his last run reached his 1000 for the season. Whitehead and he put up 86 for the first wicket, and Geary, who showed quite good form, helped him in a stand of n o for the seventh. On Tuesday the innings closed for 346. Wood allowed G. F. Bell (Repton) to replace Curgenven, who had gone under to influenza. Morton played a fine innings of 75 for Derbyshire ; nearly everyone did something, and Hughes-Hallett and Wild played so well together that they added 80 in 55 minutes for the eighth wicket. With a useful lead of 58, Leicestershire collapsed entirely on the third day before Horsley, who swung the ball considerably, and Forester ; and though Derbyshire, wanting 115, looked in none too good a position when 3 w*ere out for 33, a stand of 54 by Morton, again in excellent form, and Slater put them safe, and they won by 6 wickets. Geary took his hundredth wicket of the season in the course of the match. This is the first time he has achieved this feat, and Morton, who reached 1000 runs, also earned a new personal distinction. LANCASHIRE. At Canterbury, August 17, 18, and 19. This should have been the first match of the Dover Week, but it had to be removed to Canterbury on account of the military occupation of Dover. It proved a game of big scores, with inconclusive result, Lancashire taking three points for their first innings’ lead, of course. Five centuries were registered, and 1242 runs (the highest aggregate of the season to date} were scored in the game. Hardinge made 137 without a chance in 190 minutes, with 14 fours. Makepeace batted 195 minutes for his no, also chance- less, and also including 14 fours. John Tyldesley’s brilliant 253 were made in 325 minutes ; the veteran hit a six, 34 fours, a three, and 16 twos, and his two chances were at 191 and 210. Humphreys batted 220 minutes, gave one chance (at 28), and hit 15 fours. Woolley, who reached his 2000 at 61, made his 101 in two hours, gave no chance, and hit 13 fours. There was a partnership of 82 for Kent’s second wicket (Hardinge and Seymour) in the first innings ; in the second Humphreys and Woolley added 182 for the third, Humphreys and Day 98 for the fifth, and Day and Blythe 53 for the eighth. Makepeace and John Tyldesley put on 209 for Lancashire’s second w'icket, John and Ernest Tyldesley 101 for the fourth, and John and William Tyldesley 102 (in 50 minutes) for the fifth. K e n t .
