The home side showed to greater advantage in this game than they have done in most matches this year, and but for rain would probably have won. Langdon made his 106 in 210 minutes, hitting 15 fours, with only one chance, at 24. Smith helped him to put on 85 for the fifth wicket. In the Gloucester shire second innings Langdon and Dipper put up 68 for the first wicket ; Dipper (who reached his iooo for the season) and Roberts added 59 for the second, and Barnett and Tayler (the latter a Northleach man, playing his first game for the county) 105 for the sixth in 55 minutes by most attractive batting. Of the Sussex team only Jupp, who bowled well in both innings, Bowley, who scored 61 in 105 minutes, and A. K. Wilson distinguished themselves. Rain on Saturday cut short play, and Gloucestershire took only first innings’ points. G l o u c e s t e r s h ir e . First Innings. Dipper, b J upp C. O. H. Sewell, c Cox, b Roberts.. There seemed 110 particular reason why the wicket should favour the bowlers, and it is possible that bad batting had much to do with the collapse of both sides. Thirty wickets fell for 300 runs on the first day, the sides being even when an innings each had been completed. On the Friday Kent won by 9 wickets. For them Freeman, a younger brother of the Essex man and a googly bowler, who has done fine work for the second eleven, and Fielder bowled with great effect. Charlesworth reached his iooo runs on the first day. W a r w ic k s h ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. The chief feature of the first day’s plav was a fine innings of 124* by George Thompson, who batted 220 minutes without a chance, and hit 17 fours. He and Woolley added 72 for the fifth wicket, and the youngest of the Denton brothers aided in a stand of 80 for the sixth. Essex, 47 for 1 at close of play on Friday, raised their total to 261 on Saturday, Mclver and Freeman adding 66 for the second wicket, and C. H. Douerla^ and Tremlin 65 in a trifle over half-an-hour for the tenth. Northants were 116 for 4 at the close. Indications pointed to a close struggle ; but on Mondav a remarkable hitting innings by Wells put his side well on top. The Daventry man made 54 of the 78 added with Thomp son for the sixth wicket, and went on scoring so fast that he accounted for 119 (2 sixes, 20 fours included) of 159 put on while he was in. He gave no chance till after he had reached three figures. This is his first century for the county. Smith declared, setting Essex 321 to get. They never looked like winning, and only Mclver did much. He batted in fine style for 70 minutes. Smith bowled capitally, and had 10 for 123 in the match. Northants won by 156 runs.
