S e p t e m b e r , 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. The Score Book. W ORCESTERSH IRE v. ESSEX. In the second innings of Essex at Worcester on August 12 M. K. Foster bowled three overs, which were credited by the scorer in error to Pearson. Pearson’s figures should read : 22-3-64-0, and Foster’s 3-0-17-0 should be added to analysis. The county had a very weak side ; indeed, there was great difficulty in getting together a team at all, but Major Papworth refused to be beaten. The features of the match were a well-hit 75* by Astill and the bowling of the veteran, Walter Mead. In declaring the M.C.C. innings closed at 5 o’clock on the first day the club captain (Rev. R. Swann-Mason) would appear to have misinterpreted Law 54. M.C.C. won by an innings and two runs. C a m b r id g e s h ir e . Total 2 not out 4 0 First Innings. Second Innings. 3 b F. G. Phillips 21 W. At Leyton, August 11 and 12. Surrey had the best of matters throughout, and good innings by Sandham, Alwin, Myers, and others, and useful bowling by Platt and Gilligan gave them victory, after a declaration with only 2 wickets down, by 87 runs. Hilleard played particularly well for Essex. S u r r e y II. First Innings. C a m b r id g e s h ir e B o w l e r s ’ A n a ly s is . Lewis, a former stalwart of the Somerset side, reappeared, masquerading as “ A. Key.” He is now engaged by Crewe Alexandra. John Daniell also played once more, and W. Greenstock, who has not turned out for Worcestershire since 1899, was seen in the visiting eleven. Hylton-Stewart played a capital innings of 91 (made in 2 hours) in Somerset’s first. He and Poyntz added 53 together, and he and Robson 110. Burrows bowled finely. Worcestershire scored 183 for 4 in a couple of hours’ batting toward the close of the day, Geoffrey Foster making his 60 (one six, 11 fours) in 40 minutes. After all, however, the visitors had only a lead of 23. The Somerset batting in the second innings was poor, except for Braund, who played right through, batting 135 minutes for his 58. Bowley and Pearson hit off the 126 needed for victory in 70 minutes, Worcestershire thus winning by 10 wickets. S o m e r s e t .
