S IX TE EN TH MATCH v. ORANGE F R E E STATE. A t Bloemfontein, January 23, 24, and 25. The Free State, like Griqualand West, had always played odds in previous matches, but the decision to field only eleven men was a com mendable one. Lindsay and Jewell were the cracks of the side, while K eith Hill is a young player of something more than ordinary promise. Hobbs and Booth were left out of the English eleven. Bird and Tennyson quickly sent up 58 at the start, the Hampshire man quite out-distancing his partner. W ith Bird and Rhodes in association, 164 were added for the second wicket in about 130 minutes. Bird reached 100 after 3 hours a t the wickets, and he and Hearne had taken the score to 311 for 2 at call of time. Runs came fast on the second morn ing, and the score was 437— 215 for the wicket— before Bird left. Two sixes and 24 fours were included in his fine 200, made in a trifle under 4 ! hours. Hearne was out a t 456 ; in his 108 were 14 fours. Douglas’s 51 only occupied 43 minutes. The innings was declared at the tea interval, and before call of time the Free State had lost 7 wickets for 93. On the Monday they were all out for 117, followed on, failed completely with one exception, Steytler, who played plucky cricket, and were beaten b y an innings and 374 runs. Barnes was too much for them, as he had been in earlier matches for better men. M.C.C. T e a m . b M. C. Bird, c Lindsay, Goddard .. .. .. 200 Hon. L. H.
