438 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. A u g u s t 15, 1914. C o m m e n t s o n t h e L a n c a s h ir e v . H a m p s h ir e M a t c h . B y G . A . B r o o k in g . I t is an undoubted fa ct th at the Lancastrians are an uncom m only hard side to m aster on the Liverpool enclosure. Leicester shire earlier in the season and H ants now have been easily b e a te n ; a sim ilar thing happened in 1913 when Y orkshire and M iddlesex were van q uished ; in 1912 the same sauce w as served ou t to the Australians and South Africans, w ith the M iddlesex gam e w ashed out b y rain ; in 1911 Somersetshir and N orth am ptonshire had each to bow the knee ; in 1910 E ssex and Sussex were the victim s, w ith n ext to no p lay a t all versu s D erb ysh ire; 1909 yielded a victo ry each against W arwickshire and Essex, and then the Australians snatched a wonderful game ou t of the fire, principally owing to N oble’s splendid captaincy, though one m ust n ot forget the bow ling of H opkins. Thus of the last 15 m atches played a t A igburth, Lancashire have won 12, drawn 2, and lost 1— figures of significance. In the present gam e both sides batted poorly on the whole, though it is to be adm itted th at the b all required careful watching. John T yldesley and G arnett, in their different styles, played cap tiv atin g cricket, the Liverpool am ateur charm ing the sm all array of spectators w ith his crisp, forceful leg hitting, w hilst J. T. showed th at he is b y no means a spent force, his judgm ent in placin g the ball through Jaques’s leg traps being m ost marked. Rem nant, who originally was played in the Hampshire team for his bowling, has developed into a batsm an and— excepting Bow ell— w as the only member of the visitors to shape a t all, M ead, of whom much w as expected, losing his w ickct in the first innings through hitting w ildly a t a good ball from Dean, whilst in the second he failed to trouble the scorers m aterially. Jaques, whose d elivery reminds one of W . H . T aylor of Worcester, was quite the best bow ler of the visitors, though Brown had a better analysis. K ennedy, whose first appearance it was a t A igburth, puzzled J. T. Tyldesley, more than a little w ith his m edium pace right-handers. D ean’s bowling w as quite a feature, and this success should m ean som ething ere the season term inates to the B urnley left-hander. It is a notew orthy fa ct th at four ou t of the eight w ickets he secured during H am pshire’s first innings were from l.b.w . decisions. G arnett w as good behind the w icket, his stumping of Rogers off Parkin reviving memories o f the late R ichard Pilling. ----- ------- The Century List. S a t u r d a y , A u g u s t i . C. T.
