436 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. A u g u s t 15, 1914. Second Innings. MONMOUTHSHIRE v. KEN T II. At Newport, August io and i i . Though without Freeman (playing a t Lord’s) and others, Kent II won this match by 3 wickets. A second wicket stand by Diver and Silverlock on the Monday was not well followed up by the other Gwent batsmen, and, though Kent’s highest scorer (Heslop, of Lancing College) only made 23 in each innings, the bowling of Hickmott, who had 13 wickets in the match, pulled them through. LEICESTER SH IRE . A t Hove, August 10, 11, and 12. The places of Chaplin and Baker •on the home side were filled by Ernest Relf and Roberts, and the visitors played W. W. Odell and W. C. M. Berridge (of Malvern) for Lord and Middleton. They still lacked King. Sussex started very slowly, and at one period Albert Relf and Jupp were batting half-an- hour for an addition of 9 runs to the total. After lunch they added 50 more in 33 minutes. Jupp and Cox put on 69 in 50 minutes, and a total of 300 seemed quite likely when 220 went up with only five men out. But the sixth wicket fell at 221, and the last four added only 11. Skelding put in a remarkable piece of work. He dismissed Cox, the younger Relf, and Street with the first, third, and fifth balls of one over, and Jupp with the first ball of the next— four wickets in seven balls. .Jupp batted 220 minutes for his valuable 88, and hit 10 fours. When the visitors batted Whitehead left at 19 ; but Wood -and Mounteney added 48 unparted before call ot time. Wood was soon out next morning, and, though Mounteney stayed 75 minutes in all, he owed the length of his stay largely to luck. Odell hit 5 fours in his 23. Cox bowled with great success, tempting the batsmen to hit. When Sussex batted again Wilson left at 25. Vine and Bowley (who completed his 1000 runs for the season) then added 62. Later Albert Relf and Malik put on 142 in 85 minutes. The Indian hit 11 fours. Relf batted just over 2 hours for his 101, and hit one six and 14 fours. At call of time the total was 354 for 8. The innings was declared on Wednesday morning, and Leicestershire were set 440 to get for victory. Whitehead batted capitally for his 50, and the Malvernian, Berridge, played a very plucky innings of 61 ; but the rest did not get far, Vincett bowling with great success, and Sussex won by 221 runs. Umpires :— Brown and Moss. W ORCESTER SH IRE v. ESSEX. At Worcester, August 10, 11, and 12. Both counties were better represented than was the case elsewhere. Taylor altered the batting order considerably, and the experiments paid, Geoffrey Foster and Bowley sending up 42 before a wicket fell, and Lane, promoted, playing freely and well for his 58, made in 75 minutes. John Douglas again bowled most effectively, and in the cricumstances the total of 204 was quite a good one. Essex had 4 down for 59, of which Mclver had made 34 ; then Douglas and Russell added 48 in an hour, and at the close they were 136 for 6. The crowd did not behave well during the stand noted ; but neither Douglas nor Russell is likely to be put off his game by barracking. On Tuesday the innings closed for 178, and Worcestershire went in again. A t the outset a big total did not appear likely, for G. N. Foster left at 8, and Bowley at 44, The total was 85 when Pearson left and Chester came in, and from that stage the home side were always well ahead. M. K. Foster helped Chester to add 81 in an hour. W ith Cliff in 85 were put on in 50 minutes ; and then, after the dismissal of Burrows and Lane, Chester and Taylor fairly took the bowling in charge. In 80 minutes they added 145, when the innings was declared. Chester batted 4 hours 20 minutes in a ll; his only chance was at 100 ; he took 2 hours to reach 50, but doubled his score in another hour, and thereafter hit in great style. Three sixes and 19 fours were included in his highest score to date. Taylor, who played really well also, hit 5 fours. Essex, needing 427 for victory, scored 15 without the loss of a wicket before close of play. On Wednesday Reeves was soon out (at 25); but then Car penter and Russell, resisting all efforts to dislodge them, carried the total to 263, at which stage the match was abandoned.
