A u g u s t 15, 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 4 3 5 D E R B Y SH IR E v. WARW ICKSH IRE. A t Derby, August 10 and 11. Hughes-Hallett, the old Hailey- burian, came into the home side, replacing Wild. On a treacherous pitch Foster and Santall bowled unchanged, and only Forester reached 20. Smith got a blow on the jaw from a ball bowled by his captain, and had to have the resultant wround stitched up. All were out for 122. Warwickshire did no better. Slater bowled very effectively, and 6 wickets were down for 52. Jeeves and Hands added 30, and a brief stand by Howell and Hands for the last wicket put the visitors ahead. Bowden and Horsley, sent in to play out time, were together at the end of the day— score, 1 for o. Bowden did not stay long on Tuesday ; but Horsley made top score for his side. The batting wras again disappointing. All were out for 118, and Warwickshire, needing only 115 for victory, hit off the runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Foster took 9 for 66 in the match, and with 63 for once out was the highest scorer on either side. He hit a six and 6 fours in his 48. D e r b y s h i r e . First Innings. L. DURHAM. At New Brighton, August 10 and 11. Some really fine bowling b y Morris, who took 9 wickets for 36, put out the home side for a small score, and a well-hit century by H. L. Dales enabled Durham to take a strong lead. On Tuesday Adamson bowled with great effect, and Durham won by an innings and 119 runs. Smoker again bowled finely for Cheshire. C h e s h i r e . For the first match of the Festival— shorn of most of its gaiety by the War— Gloucestershire lacked Jessop, but had the help of Champain, who has not appeared for them since 1 9 1 1 , having spent part of the intervening time in British Columbia. Green, called up like so many more, was an absentee, and Bowles played for the first time this season. Notts did not include a single amateur, Iremonger captaining. Wass reappeared, and bowled well on a difficult wicket. Roberts played a good innings, as did Dipper, and three of the tail end made useful scores ; but all were out for 140. George Gunn and Lee, on a pitch which seemed to have improved, took the Notts score to 113 in 8 0 minutes before the Calverton man left, and at the end of the day the visitors were 7 runs ahead with 8 wickets still to go. In all Hardstaff and Gunn added 1 1 4 in 105 minutes before they were parted on the Tuesday. Their dismissal was followed by a slump, Iremonger getting no support from the later batsrfien. He made his 41 in an hour. The last 5 wickets added only 2 5 , and Parker came out with capital bowling figures. Gloucestershire failed again in their second innings. Barnett batted 1 5 0 minutes for 4 2 , and Roberts and Smith made a few ; but all were out for 1 1 3 , and Notts won by an innings and 6 9 runs. There was little excuse for the paltry score, as the wicket seemed quite to have recovered. Wass took 11 for 127 in the match, and Oates caught 6 batsmen and stumped one.
