A ugust 15, 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 433 NOTTINGHAMSHIRE v. HAMPSHIRE. A t Trent Bridge, Nottingham, August 6 and 7— no play August 8, •owing to rain. Dr. Gauld captained Notts. Hampshire had by no means their strongest team, and after Melle had bowled a few overs ihe was called away to join the colours with the Oxford Colonial Corps, Stone being wired for, with the consent of the home captain, to take his place. Hardstaff and Lee added 91 for the Notts second wicket, and John Gunn, missed at 15, was 64* at the close, when the total was 238 for 5. There were several delays through rain. On Friday Gunn carried his bat for 103 made in 190 minutes with only one chance and 11 fours. He completed his iooo runs during this innings. The sun got in some work on the soaked wicket, and Ire monger bowled in deadly form. Hants were all out for 103. They followed on, and lost 5 for 111, Mead and Newman batting well. Play was impossible on Saturday, and Notts took first innings’ points only. N o t t i n g h a m s h i r e . ■Gunn (G.), b Kennedy .. 22 Lee (G. LEICESTER SH IRE v. D ER BYSH IRE . At Leicester, August 6 and 7— no play third day (rain). The home side lacked King, A. T. Sharp, and W. N. Riley ; Derbyshire were without Capt. Baggallay and Chapman. The wicket, easy to start with, became treacherous later on. Oliver and Cadman put up 74 Tuns before the former was dismissed ; but no one gave Cadman very much help later. He batted 3 hours for 76 of 124 while in. The last 6 wickets only added 8 runs. Leicestershire had 4 down for 51 ■at close of play. They were all out for 114 on Friday, and of these Brown and Skelding put on 37 for the last wicket. Derbyshire’s second innings was marked by another capital display by Cadman and more good bowling by Brown. The former carried his bat right through, giving no chance, and scored 149 for once out in the match. Horsley helped him to add 69 for the last wicket. Brown brought his figures for the match to 12 for 129 ; he has never done so well for his county before. Set 205 to win. Leicestershire lost 5 for 30, and, though Mounteney and Middleton made a bit of a stand, were prac tically a beaten side at close of play. But no cricket was possible on Saturday, and Derbyshire gained only first innings’ points. Slater bowled effectively in both innings of the home side. D e r b y s h i r e . First Innings. L. NORTHAMPTONSH IRE. At Canterbury, August 6 and 7. The glories of Ladies’ Day at Canter bury were naturally shorn by the War, and only about 3000 spectators were present. S. H. Day turned out for Kent, replacing Fielder, and Murdin was substituted for G. A. T. Vials in the visiting side. Kent had choice of innings, and made a really good show on a wicket never quite perfect. Hardinge scored 80 odd for the fourth time in five successive ininngs, and he and Humphreys sent up 126 for the first wicket in 95 minutes. Hardinge, who hit n fours, batting about a couple of hours, was missed at 17. Seymour and Woolley put on 57 for the third wicket, the Tonbridge man scoring less quickly than usual, as his 44 took him 80 minutes. Huish and Fairservice added 42 for the ninth wicket. Northants had little chance on Friday, for the pitch suited the Kentish left-handers. The midlanders were all out for 70 in their first, and though, thanks largely to William Denton, Sydney Smith, and Claude Woolley, they did better in the follow-on, were beaten by an innings and 52.
