F e b r u a r y , 19 14 . THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 4 i C A N T E R B U R Y v. OTAGO. A t Lancaster Park, Christchurch, December ^5 and 26. W ith most of the crack Canterbury players away in Australia, Otago looked rather the stronger side on paper ; but the home team bucked up well, and won quite easily. The first Otago wicket realised 52, and the sixth (Eckhold and Bruges) 71. Canterbury had 100 up before the third wicket fe ll; but eventually they only led their old rivals by two runs on the first innings. Then Otago collapsed before Wilson and Monaghan, and Canterbury won by 6 wickets. O t a g o . First Innings. H. C. Watson, c & b Watson .. 29 A. W. Alloo, lbw, b Watson .. 28 run out .. .. o T. C A N T E R BU R Y v. W ELLINGTON . A t Lancaster Park, Christchurch, January 1, 2, and 4. Follow ing Otago, Wellington came to dispute possession of the Plunket Shield w ith the holders, but again the Canterbury side rose to the occasion. Beal and Paterson added 123 for the sixth wicket in the home side’s first, Beal playing particularly well, while his partner had quite one man’s share of luck. The Wellington fielding was not up to the mark, though Blacklock made a brilliant catch, and Hay, Midlane, and Tucker did good work. Wellington had 7 dowTi for 109 a t the end of the first day. On the Saturday the innings closed for 169, Monaghan (w'ho used to play for Wellington) and Wilson, a young leg-break bowler of considerable promise, having done most of the damage. In their second innings the home side had 4 wickets down for 44, but W hitta then helped Bishop, who played a very good innings of 90, to add 81, and Watson aided Bishop in a stand of 62 for the seventh wicket. Wellington required 452 to win, and had 4 out for 61 at close of play. The only remaining feature of note was a plucky stand of over 50 for the ninth wicket by two new men, McGirr and Hay. Wilson bowled finely, using his head well, and had 11 for 156 in his second big match. Canterbury won by 243 runs. Cricket in South Africa. DU RB AN v. NO RTH ERN D ISTR IC T S OF NATAL. A t Durban, December 26. Neither side was at anything like full strength, a fact which mattered less to Durban than to the Northern team. The latter were captained by the Rev. C. D. Robinson, who only just missed his blue for Cambridge some tw enty years ago. He kept wicket, as of old, in capital style ; but apart from him only L. Taylor, a younger brother of Herbert and Dan, who bowled really well, earned much credit. Bening- field and Henwood added 104 together, and Deane and Collins put on 70. Tuckett, who played for the first time in a test match a little later, and Chapman, a googly bow-ler, who may yet gain international honours, wrorked havoc with the ball. Durban won by an innings and 18 runs ten minutes before time, Tuckett judging the declaration to a nicety. N o r t h e r n D is t r ic t s . First Innings. Rev. C. D. Robinson, b Chapman .. S.
