4 16 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. A u g u s t 8, 1914. Y O R K SH IR E v. GLOUCESTERSH IRE. A t Harrogate, July 30 and 31. The Western County would have fared very poorly indeed but for Dipper, who batted 190 minutes for a chanceless 95. and was ninth out to a rather wild stroke, the result apparently of haste to reach three figures before the imminent end came. He hit one six and 7 fours. No one else reached 20. Rhodes and Wilson put up 73 before the first Yorkshire wicket fell, and at the close the White Rose team were only 20 behind, with 8 wickets still to go. Kilner and Wilson, the overnight not outs, added in all 119 in 65 minutes. Wilson reaching his century in 150 minutes, and Kilner making his 79 (14 fours) in 105. Wilson also hit 14 fours. He gave two chances. Kilner’s innings was faultless. White and Dolphin hit merrily for 40 minutes, and added 82 for the last wicket. Smith distinguished himself by making five catches. Gloucestershire did badly again. Langdon, top scorer, scored at a good pace ; Jessop hit 5 fours ; Sewell slammed a six the ball before he was bowled ; the rest simply succumbed with scarcely a kick. Dolphin caught five in the two innings. Yorkshire won by an innings and 118 runs. Y o r k s h i r e . Wilson (B. B.), c Smith, Jessop Rhodes, b Dennett .. Denton (D.), b Jessop Kilner, b Dennett .. Day turned out for Kent, and A. E. Gibson for the home side. The visitors had the best of the first day’s play, owing largely to the all-round cricket of Hickmott, who made top score and took 5 wickets. They were 50 for 1 in their second at its close, and on Saturday, after heavy rain, Wood and Day hit out well while the pitch was easy. Later it became difficult, and none of the Lincolnshire batsmen could do anything with Smith and Freeman. Kent won by 153 runs. K e n t II. First Innings. Second Innings. G. E. C.
