F e b r u a r y , 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. The Score Book. Cricket in Australia. N EW SOUTH W ALE S v. QUEENSLAND . A t Sydney, December 12, 13, and 15. McLaren, who had played a t Melbourne, had to return to Brisbane, and the Queens land bowling was consequently weakened. The visitors’ first innings was a very creditable display, Sheppard and Fennelly putting up 81 for the first wicket, Rowe and Fennelly adding 85 for the third, and Thompson and Redgrave 61 for the fifth. •Fennelly batted two hours for his capital 78, and Rowe made his 53 in an hour. Folkard, the most effective bowler, is past the colt stage, and is scarcely likely to be seen in international cricket, though of late no one has shown better all-round form in Sydney grade matches than he. For N.S.W . Davis, a left hander of great promise, and Andrews added 143 for the third wicket, their stand lasting into the second day. Andrews was bowled in lashing out wildly when he only needed four to complete his century. Seven were out for 291 ; but Macartney and Scott, the Petersham *fast bowler, added 218 for the eighth wicket. Macartney’s 195 only occupied 132 minutes, and the ■only chance included was in the long-field at 150. Scott, a hitter by nature, showed unexpected restraint and judgment, and gave nothing like a chance. Queensland’s task was a hopeless one, and only Fennelly and Ayres did much. Kelleway, who had bowled so well at Brisbane, was again on the spot. Munn was disappointing behind the wicket, and allowed a great many byes. N.S.W . won by an innings and 28 runs. NEW SOUTH W A LE S v. SOUTH AU STRA L IA . A t Sydney, December 19, 20, 22, and 23. South Australia sent a very young team east, even the senior members of it being anything but veterans. Winser, who has played for Staffordshire, kept wicket in Campbell’s absence. Mayne won the toss, and he and Crawford added 84 for the second wicket. The old Reptonian made his 91 at the rate of a run a minute, and hit 17 fours. His was a capital innings. So was young Pellew’s. In his first appearance for his state the colt'showed a fine aptitude for cutting, and his 57 also included some rasping cover-shots. Middleton was hurt and had to retire, but came in again when the ninth wicket had fallen, and helped Pellew to add 34. When the home side batted Mayne caught Bardsley brilliantly off his first stroke, a hard hit. Kelleway stayed to add 73 with Macartney. A t call of time the total was 149 for 2, and Trumper and the little man were together. Those who came to the ground early on the second morning in anticipation of a big stand were fated to disappointment, however. Trumper left with only one added, and Macartney went at 174. He had played another really great innings, though on the Saturday he never reached his form of the first day. Andrews and Barbour added 70 for the sixth wicket. South Australia went in again in a minority of 26, and lost two wickets with only 2 on the board. Moyes, with some luck, and Mayne improved matters, adding 73. Crawford made 40 (a six and 6 fours included) in 35 minutes of 68 added with Mayne. In all the visiting captain batted 135 minutes for his invaluable and most solid 58. Seven wickets were down for 183 at the close of Saturday’s play, and the eighth fell at 207 on Monday. Here Rundell and Kirkwood, batting very soundly, put on 68, and eventually N .S.W . were set 265 to win. Kelleway left at 29, but Bardsley and Macartney took the score to 83 before the left-hander was finely caught on the leg side b y Winser. When Trumper played on at 125, and Macartney did likewise at 126, South Australian stock soared high. Davis and Andrews, though the former was never very comfortable, added 41 ; but 7 wickets were down for 197 at close of play. The eighth fell at 205 next morning, and although Mailey stayed with Folkard to add 39, all was over by one o ’clock, and the youthful South Australian team had won a fine victory by 19 runs. John Crawford’s all-round play and Edgar Mayne’s generalship were big factors in the win ; but others played their parts right well, and the usefulness of Kirkwood’s slow, high- tossed leg breaks must not be overlooked. 20 57 12 19 6 6 18 30 13 E.
