382 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. J u l y 25, 1914. At Southampton, July 20, 21, and 22. This match was for Alec Bowell’s benefit, and C. B. Fry and the Hon. L. H. Tennyson turned out by special request for the home side, who have quite an embarrassing number of good men to choose from just now, for Greig, Harrison, Stone, and Remnant were all standing down. The visitors gave Stannard, the nursery colt, a further trial, and substituted Roberts for Havelock Davies. There had been heavy rain on the Sunday night, and the start had to be delayed half-an-hour. Then Sussex fared badly on the wet wicket, losing 5 for 66. Albert Relf (missed at 13) saved his side, batting in his best style for 150 minutes for his 87 (14 fours), and cutting particularly well. Vincett helped him to add 47, and Street aided in the best stand of the innings, one of 55 for the ninth wicket. The first Hampshire wicket realised 28, the second 38, and at call of time they were 87 for 2, and seemed to hold an advantage. Tennyson soon left on Tuesday ; but Newman (who gave a chance at n ) and Mead then stayed 80 minutes together and added 85, of which the England man’s share was a brilliant 61 (8 fours). Newman batted 2 hours for his steady 47. After lunch Roberts bowled with pronounced success, and the last 6 wickets fell for 35. Thus Hants had only the small lead of 41. Before call of time Sussex had made 182 for 5. No one did anything remarkable ; but Wilson and Chaplin added 58 in partnership, and Vine and Jupp also batted very well. On Wed nesday 4 men went quickly, Chaplin being out for a really good 56 ; Cox and Roberts made a useful stand of 29 for the last wicket, and Hants were set 189 to get for victory. Their start was a bad one, Bowell and Tennyson going cheaply, and with 35 for 3 up rain inter rupted play. A resumption was possible later, but Hampshire had not time to get the runs necessary for victory, and had to be content with first innings’ points. S u s s e x . First Innings. H. L. At Edgbaston, July 20, 21, and 22. Murdin came back into the visiting team, and Warwickshire gave a place to Frank Foster’s younger brother, an old Reptonian and Cambridge socker blue. There was a late start on Monday, and very little play took place, owing to heavy rain in the district. The one feature of the game as far as it went—Northants scoring 109 for 3—was a well-hit 53 in just over 40 minutes by Haywood. On Tuesday only about two hours’ play was possible. Smith hit finely for his 62, he and Thompson adding 83 together, and all the others who batted made some runs, Woolley, favoured by fortune, being 50* at call of time. Play was again delayed on the Wednesday. When it was possible to resume, the visitors’ innings was at once declared closed, and Warwickshire were s“nt in on a wicket which gave the bowlers assistance. Among the players taking part were N. Grenier, who represented Auckland once or twice while a student at Auckland University, and C. B. Atkinson, who has played for Bedfordshire. Selangor had an easy victory by 252 runs, thanks mainly to a well-hit century by Atkinson and effective bowling by McLinnell (5 for 8 in the first innings) and Hennessy ( n for 59 in the match).
