J u l y 25 , 19 14 . THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 379 NORTHUMBERLAND v. CHESHIRE. At Newcastle, July 20 and 21. Cheshire showed capital form on a ■wicket that was never easy in this match. Good bowling by Smoker and Williams disposed of the northern shire for 157, only R. G. Morrison, who played a capital innings, offering any long resistance. Cheshire were dismissed for 129, C. M. Skinner, the Northumbrian captain, bowling in deadly form, and Meldon following up his Dublin success by taking three wickets cheaply. Wyatt, the only man to make double figures, put up a determined resistance while others failed. Hope and Smoker then dismissed Northumberland for 83, and Cheshire were left with 112 to get for victory—no light task, as the run of the match thus far went. But so well did the first pair, Wild and Wyatt, play that by call of time they had put up 51 unparted, and on Tuesday the rest was comparatively easy, Cheshire winning by 6 wickets. The pitch was of the type on which winning the toss meant a good deal, and, Cornwall getting first innings, Berkshire were always struggling. The stand made by Morgan and Vibart in the home side’s first was the biggest one of the match. No one else did much in that innings, and the visitors failed completely before Whiting when they went in. Tresawna, Whiting, and Vibart batted very well in Cornwall’s second, and Berkshire, set 188 to win, could only make 100, Norris and Nepean alone staying long. Whiting followed up a series of notable bowling achievements in this and last season by taking 13 for 79 in the match. Cornwall won by 87 runs. C o r n w a l l . First Innings. H. Owing to rain there was but very little play on the first day, and the whole game was fought out on a treacherous pitch. Awty was the only man to top 20 in the match. Falconer and Wilson bowled with great effect, and Bames did the hat trick. Staffordshire, taking first innings’ points, brought their per centage down from 100 to 93*33.
