Cricket 1914

378 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. J u l y 25, 1914. At Bletchley Park, July 16 and 17. Neither side had quite full strength ; but E. H. 13 . Sewell was able to play and captain the home team, and his many friends will be glad to hear of his taking the field again after his serious illness. Mitchell bowled effectively for the visitors, and though de Rothschild and Fairbairn gave Bucks a decent start and Hamilton topped 50 they were all out for 150. Newman and Davenport made a useful first wicket stand for Wilts, and Henslow, Awdry, Mathews, and Miller all got runs, with the result that they led by 87 on the first innings, and before time had lowered one wicket in the home side’s second for 22. On the Friday there was a slump before Mitchell and Newman, and 8 wickets were down with the score still in arrear. Then the Sewells, father and son, became associated, and added 68, so that after all Wilts were put in to get 78 to win. They won by 8 wickets. B u c k i n g h a m s h i r e . First Innings. Though a trifle short of bowling, the County Palatine had the strongest batting team which has represented it this season. Given first innings, it would probably have done as well as Surrey did, for the wicket on the Saturday was a good one. But when Wilkinson won the toss Lancashire’s troubles began, and they only ended when the match was finished. Hayward and Hobbs sent up 71 in 40 minutes before the veteran was dismissed. Then Hobbs and Harrison commenced a partnership which lasted 2\ hours, and added 206 to the score. Hobbs was the first to go. He batted 195 minutes for his 142, with only one chance, in the slips at 49. Sixteen fours were included in his innings, and he scored by strokes all round the wicket in his best style. The second wicket fell at 277 ; but 5 were down for 279, Knight, Harrison, and Wilkinson all going at that total. Harrison, who batted really well, just missed his century. Ducat stayed an hour for a capital 44, and Fender and Hitch hit well, the latter making his 30 in 25 minutes. The day’s play ended with the close of the Surrey innings for 402. On Monday Lancashire were in hopeless case, for there had been a good deal of rain, not enough to make the wicket soft, but enough to make it greasy on top and to cause the ball to come along at all sorts of varying paces. Hitch proved alto gether too much for most of the batsmen, and though he only took S wickets in the twro innings the Lancashire breakdown was chiefly due to him. Ernest Tyldesley was the only man who stayed long in the first, though Whitehead hit up a few ; in the second* Spooner, with 67 made in his best style, towered above all his colleagues, and got little support from anyone but William Tyldesley. Hornby was twice out to Hitch without scoring a run ; MacLaren, bowled in the first innings by a ball which came in from the off and took his leg stump when he had made up his mind to let it pass, succumbed to a yorker in the second ; Garnett failed completely ; and John Tyldesley and Sharp did nothing of any account. Surrey won by an innings and 158*:runs. S u r r e y . I Abel (W. J.), cTyldesley (W.), S e c o n d I n n i n g s :—Newman, not out, 39 ; G. C. Davenport, c Hamilton, b E. H. D. Sewell, 11 ; C. A fine fourth wicket stand by House hold and Etheridge on the Friday was the principal factor in Hert fordshire’s piling up a score which put defeat almost out of the question for them. But they could not win outright, Geoffrey Stevens showing some of his form of three or four years ago in each of Norfolk's innings. Pedder and Michael Falcon made a good stand in the first after a disastrous start, and other men contributed useful scores. Hertford shire took first innings’ points. H e r t f o r d s h i r e . It does not often happen that two batsmen reach the century in the same innings in league matches ; but H. Bryant and T. Clare each scored three figures for Stourbridge (251 for one) v. Smethwick (264 for 6) on Saturday. The afternoon’s play thus realised over 500 runs for 7 wickets. S. A. Dorman (86) and D. Dorman (69) were chief scorers for Srhethwiek.
