The visitors were very weakly repre sented, lacking Bennett, Brougham, Woodburn, Belcher, and others, and were practically a beaten side quite early on the first day. Carroll made another century, and Beech, playing his second game for the county, also reached three figures. Heathcote-Amory, who was tried for Oxford, bowled most effectively. Berkshire’s veteran skipper batted best for his side, who went under by an innings and 158 runs. D e v o n . M r . M. R . D ic k s o n (The Scottish Captain). GENTLEMEN OF IRELAND v. GENTLEMEN OF SCOTLAND- At Rathmines, Dublin, July 16, 17, and 18. In the absence of Fraser, Sievwright, and others the Scottish side was far from representa tive ; Ireland lacked Crawfurd and did not draw upon the north to any extent. On a slow pitch Scotland started well, Sorrie (54 in 78 minutes) and Dickson (59 in 65) playing good bright cricket ; but with 5 down for 185 there came a change in the situation, due largely to effective bowling by Meldon (Northumberland), and all were out for 224. Lambert, for so many years Ireland’s crack all-rounder, and Shaw batted capitally, and at call of time the men of Erin had scored 176 for 3. Quinlan had had to retire hurt, and was in hospital suffering from concussion when the game was resumed on Friday. The Irish innings took very much such a turn as that of Scotland had on the previous day, Paton (Fife) playing Meldon’s part then. All were out for 249. Scotland had 5 down for 78, Meldon having taken three of them ; but at this stage Kerr (Greenock) and Paterson (of the Carlton C.C., Edinburgh) added 99, and at the close of the day the western representative was still not out with 74 after batting over 3 hours. Scotland were 196 for 6 at the close. There was a fine finish. The Scots only added 11 on Saturday, Meldon again proving effective, and Ireland were set 183 to win. They were handicapped by the loss of Quinlan, of course ; but when, after 5 wickets had gone cheaply, Donnelly and Bateman made a stand of 91 in an hour, it did not appear that the issue of the game would be likely to turn upon this. But Donnelly ran himself out ; Nicoll, who bowled capitally, disposed of Bateman, Kelly and Ward for the addition of very few, and Scotland won by 11 runs. G e n t l e m e n o f S c o t l a n d . W.
