YORKSHIRE. At Chesterfield, July *6, 17, and 18. The home side had Baggallay back, but lacked Chapman. Yorkshire gave Holmes another trial; it is recognised that he has a lot of cricket in him, though he had done nothing so far for the county this season. There was less than two hours play on the Thursday, when Derbyshire batted on a wet, easy wicket. Oliver and Morton put up 66 ; but no one else did anything, and 4 were down for 113 at the end of the brief day’s play. On Friday Baggallay batted 70 minutes for his 42, playing with real pluck and skill, and hitting a six and 5 fours. Rhodes and Wilson sent up 68 t}16^rst Yorkshire wicket, and Kilner and Denton added 102 for the Thornes batsman was in 130 minutes for his excellent 77, which included 9 fours. At call of time the score was 224 for 5, York shire thus looking to be in a strong position. So it proved, for on the Saturday the wicket was always difficult. Oldroyd was missed when he had scored 10 ; Holmes played well; it was chiefly due to these two that 73 were added to the White Rose score. When Derbyshire batted again Morton rose superior to the difficulties of the wicket ; but the rest failed dismally. No one else seemed able to score at a ll; but 64 were on the board when the third wicket fell. The fourth was taken at 67, the fifth at 68, and the last five went down without the addition of a single run ! Diake, put 011at 59, mainly caused the collapse, though Rhodes helped. Drake had four wickets—those of Baggallay, Cur genven, Hurt, and Forester—with four successive balls, and in all took 5 for 6, figures which are among the most sensational on record. Morton deserves great credit for his innings. Yorkshire won by an innings and 48 runs. D e r b y s h ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. Morton, b Booth .. .. . . 3 5 c Dolphin, b Rhodes.. 50 L. SUSSEX. At Leicester, July 16 and 18—no play second day owing to rain. This match was for the benefit of Harry Whitehead, who stood down two years ago to let poor Jayes have a benefit out of his turn. It was therefore doubly unfortunate that it should have been marred by rain. Only about 2000 spectators were present, in dull weather, on the first day. Leicestershire’s fielding was poor at the outset; the life given Wilson did not matter, but Bowley’s bit of luck enabled him to help in a second wicket stand of 67 with Vine. The batting was not of the exhiliarating type. Vine was in 100 minutes for his 29, and Chaplin 150 for 59, while Relf, though scoring somewhat faster, never forced the pace. Rain stopped play at 6.20, when the home side had lost 2 wickets for 22. When play was resumed after the blank day Wood and King took the total to 43 ; but then King left, and three more wickets had fallen by the time the score reached 52. Coe and Sidwell added 27. The latter made top score for the side and his best for his county. The sun was making its effect felt on the soft wicket by this time. Sussex made a good effort to secure full points, Chaplin declaring at 100 for 7 ; but, though there seemed hope when Wood was early bowled by Cox, a good innings by Whitehead and some steady play by King put Leicestershire out of danger of an out right defeat, and the visitors only took first innings’ points. Tunstall— the only century of the day in the six league matches. A . Amott’s 57* for Leek v. Norton included n fours. Bernard Meakin scored 67 for Stone v. Knypersley, and Sedgwick 68 for Knypersley. F o r Phoenix v. Pembroke (Dublin) A. C. Bateman, an old Armagh R.S. boy, made 103 in an hour and a half, hitting a couple of sixes and 15 fours. Chosen to play for the Gentlemen of Ireland v. the Gentlemen of Scotland, he performed very creditably in each innings.
