The home side had hard lines n not pulling off this match, for they had built up a very strong position when ram came along to prevent a finish. F. C. Wild, G. Blackburn, S Chambers all made runs for them, and Smoker again oowled well, taking io of the 13 Lancashire wickets which fell. C h e s h i r e . v „ o ^ rst Innings. Second Innings. On the Wearmouth C.C.’s ground at Sunderland, July 15 and 16. A twelve-a-side game of rather a ’twixt-wind-and-water type, for while Durham played a purely amateur side Cumberland included five professionals. T. A. Bulmer, the Durham secretary, played for them ; but of course he may be a Cumbrian by birth. They macle 272, thanks largely to a well-hit 87 in 100 minutes (one six, 11 fours) by Hardcastle, and their opponents had scored 122 for 4 at call of time on the first day. No play was possible, owing to rain, on the Thursday. Hardcastle is a Yorkshireman, but has never had a trial for his native county. A. B. Horsley, who made top score for the Durham side, has not previously played for the county for nine years, but batted really well, getting his runs in an hour. C u m b e r l a n d . At Newcastle, July 15 and 16. “ Northumberland C. & G.” would have been the more correct title, as the only professional the county played was Clifton (Notts), who has not yet completed his qualifying period. They were strong in amateurs, however, whereas the Authentics had by no means as powerful a team as they usually take north. Melle’s 60, made in an hour, was the only score of any note in their first innings. Morrison and Hunting had a productive partnership for Northumber land’s third wicket, the Carthusian making 94 in 75 minutes, while the Lorettonian reached his century in 90 minutes, and was 104* at the close of Wednesday’splay. Heavy rain rendered any play on Thursday quite impossible. O x f o r d U n i v e r s i t y A u t h e n t i c s . .. 15 .. 167 N o r f o l k B o w l e r s ’ A n a l y s i s .
