Cricket 1914
No. 17. V o l. I. SATURDAY, JULY 25. 1914. P r ic e 3 d. Pavilion Gossip. The worse the time the better the end, and under sky and sun I go to play the cricketer’s part, and turn the bowlers on : And one will bowl me fast balls, and one will bowl me slow, And one will bowl me cunning aud straight, and the bails will g e : B ut fast come, slow come, the grass and winds are free, And heigh-ho, follow the game, the world is fair to me ! E. E. B ow en . T he old Harrovian, H. P. Chaplin, who played his first big cricket and scored his first century in first-class games (144 for Bombay Presidency v. Parsis) while w ith his regiment in India, was the first amateur to reach a four- figure total this season, beating Frank Foster on the post. C h a p l i n totalled 1138 in his first regular season in first- class cricket (1910), making 172 not out v. Hampshire at Southampton and 103 v. Worcestershire at Worcester. His aggregate in 1911 was 1048, w ith 111 v. Lancashire at Hove as his highest score. In 1912 he fell 29 short of three figures, his one century being 112 v. Leicestershire a t Leicester. Last year he made 1134 without a three- figure innings to help him. H e is probably a better batsman now than ever he has been before. For some time after he broke his leg in the winter of 1910-1 the results of the accident interfered with his quickness of m ovem ent; a slight limp would be evident now and then. But from this he seems to be quite free again now. ;I t was on the 16th that he reached his 1000, Foster following on the 17th. The Warwickshire captain totalled four figures in 1911, but not in either 1912 or 1913. Percy Perrin followed them on the 20th. D r a k e ’s great feat v. Derbyshire is not a record, for in 1907 A lbert Trott took four wickets with four balls v. Somerset a t Lord’s, and later in the same innings did the hat trick— a performance which led the captain of the side thus operated upon, S. M. J. Woods, to present him with a new straw hat with a specially designed ribbon, chastely ornamented with rabbits. Photo by] [Messrs. E. Hawkins & Co.t Brighton. M r. H. P. C h a p lin .
