J u l y id, 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 355 CORNWALL v. WILTSHIRE. At Camborne, July 8 and 9. The home side lacked Tresawna and J. C. Bickford-Smith, and the visitors had by no means their strongest team. First innings doubtless gave them an advantage, which they held throughout. Newman and Davenport made nearly half the runs between them ; and Newman and Mitchell bowled finely. Onlv two men did much for Cornwall—Hawken, who had 6 for 27 in Wiltshire’s second, and Vibart, who made a gallant effort to pull off the game for hi§ side. Wiltshire won by 52 runs. At Bristol, July 9 and 10. The home side lacked Jessop, and Hants were without Fry and Jaques (all at the Oval), but included Harrison again after an absence of some weeks. On a tricky wicket the westerners collapsed before Newman and Kennedy, and were all out for 34, the lowest of the season in a first-class match. Except for Mead, none of the Hampshire batsmen really conquered the difficulties of the pitch, and at one time a small total seemed likely, for 5 were out for 59. Then Harrison hit out, his partnership with Mead realising 45 in 25 minutes, and a little later Remnant aided in a stand of 64. Mead played great cricket for 150 minutes for his fifth century of the season. He gave no chance, and hit 12 fours. Dennett bowled well, but was poorly supported. Gloucestershire were 27 for o at call of time, but on Friday again failed before Kennedy and Newman, who took 10 wickets each in the match, the former securing his hundredth of the season. Langdon alone stayed long, batting 90 minutes for 39. Hampshire won by an innings and 65 rims. G l o u c e s t e r s h i r e . First Innings. Second Innings. Kent could spare Woolley more easily than Somerset could White. Except for the captain, the visiting batsmen all failed on a wicket that was by no means really bad, if the ball did now and then do unexpected things. Poyntz hit up his 51* (one six, 6 fours) in 70 minutes. Kent had 3 wickets down cheaply ; but Hubble and Jennings added 91, and from that point the home side were always on top. Hubble batted 155 minutes for his chanceless 115, his second century of the season, and hit a six and 13 fours. The innings closed early on Friday, only a single being added to the overnight total of 249 for 9. Braund, Robson, and Banes-Walker batted very well in Somerset’s second ; the amateur, making his first appearance for the county, twice drove Blythe over the pavilion ; but defeat was always a certainty, and before four o’clock Kent had won by 9 wickets. Blythe had 11 for 133 in the match. S o m e r s e t . First Innings. Second Innings. A. D. E. The totals were : Cheltenham, 193 (C. A. H. Hillier 61) and 185 (J. A. Sanger 57, H. L. H. Du Boulay 47) ; Clifton, 200 (S. B. Morgan 52, C. James 48) and 153 (A. F. Bickmore 30, E. C. C e n t u r i e s in the big Leagues were far more plentiful on Saturday than on any other day this season. In the Central Lancashire League there were four, in the North Staffordshire League three, in the Lan cashire League two, and in the Birmingham League one. L. F. T a y l o r , the young Walsall and Staffordshire batsman, who will be qualified for Warwickshire next season, played a most brilliant innings of 175 (in a total of 251 for 3) for Walsall v. Smethwick. He made his runs in an hour and a half, and hit 5 sixes and 24 fours.
