Cricket 1914

354 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. J u ly 18, 1914. The Score Book. LANCASHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. At Old Trafford, July 8, 9, and 10. The Gentlemen v. Players’ match kept out Spooner, and Hornby was disabled. F. W. Musson (of Tonbridge and Cambridge) made his first appearance for Lancashire, as did Parkin, the Church C.C.’s professional. John Shields turned out for the first time this season in a county match. Parkin bowled in deadly fashion on a soft wicket, and the visitors were all out for 128. Makepeace dislocated a left-hand finger in the endeavour to make a catch, and when Lancashire had to bat for a few minutes at the end of the day (play had been shortened by rain) Garnett took Huddleston in with him. The score at the close was 4 for o. On Thursday, though the pitch was never easy, the first pair took the score to 55 before they were parted. Ernest Tyldesley played a really fine innings, meeting some excellent bowling with confidence for an hour and a half ; and Makepeace and Parkin added 33 in 20 minutes, though the foot baller could use only one hand. Brown bowled well, and, though meeting with more punishment than either Geary or King, secured half-a-dozen wickets. After a first wicket stand of 34, the Leicester shire batsmen in their second innings could do nothing with Parkin, who came out of the match with the splendid analysis of 14 for 99, and early on the Friday Lancashire won by 8 wickets.
