(Continued from page 325). There have been a good many instances of brothers playing in the ’Varsity match, though not very many of brothers playing together, as the Lytteltons, the Studds, the Webbes, the Riddings, the Marshams, the Palairets, and some few others did, and very few of brothers playing in opposition as R. O. and R. B. Lagden did in one match—indeed, this may be the only instance, though another would have been furnished had J. H. Naumann played for Cambridge this year. Four brothers Lyttelton played for Cambridge—the Hon. C. G. (now Lord Cobham), the Hon. G. W . S., the Hon. Edward, and the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton. Their father, Lord Lyttelton, played in one of the early games, and the Hon. C. F. W., a son of Lord Cobham, quite recently. This is th« only instance of three generations in the ’Varsity match, though R. N. R. Blaker’s grandfather preceded him in the Cambridge ranks. Four brothers Studd— J. E. K., G. B., C. T.. and R. A.— played for Cambridge. Three brothers Foster—H. K., R. F.., and G. N.—appeared for Oxford ; three Fords—W. J., A. F. J., and F. G. J.—for Cambridge ; three Riddings—A., C. H., and W .—for Oxford ; three Marshams— C. D. B., C. J. B., and R. H. B.— for Oxford, C. D. B.’s son, C. H. B., appearing many years later; the Hon. E. H. and the Hon. R. Grimston played for Oxford, and the Hon. F. S. Grimston for Cambridge ; R. D. Walker played for Oxford, and his brothers John and Frederick for Cambridge; three Bathursts—F., R . A., and S. E., played for Oxford. R. L. Jones-Bateman (O.) and J. P. Jones-Bateman (C.) ; F. A. Phillips (O.) and E. S. Phillips (C.) ; G. J. Mordaunt (O.) and H. J. Mordaunt (C.) ; E. Balfour (O.) and R. D. Balfour (C.) ; E. L. Bateman (O.) and A. Bateman (C.) ; R. Clement (O.) and R. A. Clement (C.) ; R. O. Lagden (O.) and R. B. Lagden (C.) ; F. C. G. Naumann (O.) and J. H. Naumann (C.) •—are instances of a brother playing for each ’Varsity. Oxford Blues ( continued). F r o m DURHAM (one player, filling 2 places in the elevens). P l a y e d t w o y e a r s :— E. S. Fowler, E. S. and T. P. Gamier, A. M. and F. H. Hollins, G. E. and T. Hughes, \ . and F. G. Inge, H. and S. Linton, C. and G. S. Marriott, L. -.C. H. and R. C. N. Palairet, A. G. and A. G. Pawson, A. arid A. F. Payne, C. C. and H. C. Pilkington, E. F. S. and H. G. Tylecote, A. K. and H. D. Watson, C. W. M. and M. C. Kemp, and A. J. and H. R. Webbe. The Cambridge instances are : T. W . and W . Bury, R. N. and James Douglas, N. F.' and W. G. Druce, S. and W . M. Fenn, A. G. and D. Q. Steel, C. E. M. and E. R. Wilson, F. J. V. and G. W. V. Hopley, J. M. and F. Lee, C. L. and F. H. Norman, J. H. and J. W. Marshall, and E. H. and W . P. Pickering. The doubtful cases (cases, that is, where the compiler of these jottings has no definite information) are those of C. E. and F. J. Coleridge, J. I. and W . H. Patterson, G. E. and C. D. Yonge, C. W . and C. P. Foley, E. A. and J. M. Fuller, F. N. and S. N. Micklethwait, B. S. T. and W . Mills, and G. E. and C. E. Winter. Three Jenners played for Cambridge—Herbert (afterwards Jenner-Fust), C. H., and H. L. It is believed that two were brothers and the third a cousin ; but on this point one is quite open to correction. Four Randolphs played for Oxford— B. M., C., J., and L. C. B. M. and L. C. were probably brothers, for they had the same birthplace—Much Hadham. Possibly the M .C.C. Scores and Biographies would settle some of these doubtful points ; but the absence of page numbers in the indices renders consultation of the prodigious fourteen volumes rather too heavy a task when time is short. Some reader with empty hours on his hands may possibly be willing to help Cambridge Blues (continued). F r o m DEDHAM (one player, filling 3 places in the elevens).
