J u l y i i , 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. r y* .il C\l j -'k « 3 3 9 SUSSEX v. SOMERSET. At Hove, July 6 and 7. Somerset lacked White (and others), and, batting first on a drying wicket, gave a display of how not to do it. Braund was the one exception. While Albert Relf and Cox had everyone else stuck up he found opportunities to score, and, eighth out at 63, had made 40 in 90 minutes when he left. On a somewhat improved pitch Sussex scored freely. Vine actually reached his 50 in an hour, and outpaced Robert Relf, with whom he made 106 for the second wicket in 65 minutes. In all he only batted 80 minutes for his 66. Jupp was in five minutes longer for 43, and at the close, when the score was 269 for 8, Bow'ley was 61*. The colt carried his score to 80 on Tuesday. He batted in capital style for about a couple of hours, hitting a six and 6 fours. In a hopeless position, Somerset yet played up much better in their second innings. Rippon, early missed, and Braund put up 61 for the first wicket ; Robson showed a glimpse of his old form in hitting up 55 in as many minutes ; and Hyman, Hope, Ball, and Marshall (the Taunton School captain) all made decent scores. Robert Relf bowled in his best form, and had a fine analysis. Sussex needed only 55, and hit off the runs in 35 minutes, winning by 8 wickets. S o m e r s e t . First Innings. A. D. E. Rain in the morning kept down the attendance ; but 3000 were present—not a bad crowd for most grounds. Play before lunch consisted of five balls and the loss of Wilson’s wicket for o. Fielder’s bowling got up awkwardly, and Hirst had to retire hurt, coining in again, however, at the fall of the eighth wicket. Kilner, out of luck lately, played a really good innings of 50, batting two hours while others failed. Some excellent hitting by Seymour and Woolley put Kent in an apparently strong position by the end of the day, when they had scored 96 for 5. During the night there was a heavy rainstorm, but play was possible at the usual time.. Kent’s apparent advantage was discounted when the last 5 wickets went down for an addition of only 30. Rhodes and Wilson quickly wiped off the arrears ; but when once they were parted wickets fell fast, and though Drake hit well, 6 were down for 66. Booth was given out hit w’icket, having trodden on his stumps ; the Yorkshire captain was apparently of opinion that he had done so ajier completing his stroke, for he consulted both umpires and Troughton before he could be satisfied. Of the remainder only Oldroyd did anything. The pitch just suited Blythe, who bowled in his finest form. Kent needed only 76 for victory ; but at one time they looked like being pushed hard, for they had 5 down for 40. Booth took all five, three of them in four balls. But Humphreys stayed, and he and Troughton hit off the runs, the champions winning by 5 wickets. Y o r k s h ir e First Innings. Rhodes, c Woolley, b Fairservice . Wilson (B. Umpires : Marlow and Parris. Rhodes* Hirst, GLAMORGAN v. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. At Swansea, July 6 and 7 Northants turned up in full force, Glamorgan played Bates, the Yorkshireman, who can scarcely be qualified yet. The interest shown in the match was disappointingly small, only about 500 attending on the first day. The home captain, Riches played a great innings on the Monday, carrying his bat right through his side’s first venture, and only missing his century for want of someone to stay with him, and was again seen to advantage when Glamorgan batted again, Tait and Bates also showing good form then. For Northants East and the Denton brothers were most prominent. Riches’s declaration left the visitors 240 to get in 2J hours ; but they regarded the task as too big (and no doubt were right), and did not go for the runs. G l a m o r g a n . First Innings.
