Cricket 1914
334 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. J u l y i i , 1914. At Lord’s, July 2, 3, and 4. Arnold (Malvern) and Vincent (Hailey- bury) were given another trial, Riley being left out. M.C.C. had a pretty strong side, Jessop captaining To start with Morrison and Arnold sent up 81—the best stand of the match—before the first wicket fell. Arnold’s 89 were made in about 2 hours, chiefly by excellent driving ; he hit 8 tours. No one else but these two did much. Kidd’s slows proving very effective. Fairbairn bowled effectively when M.C.C. batted and jessop’s 35—very restrained for him—was the highest score. Cambridge had a lead of 37 on the first innings. There was a little play on Friday, when Cambridge lost 3 wickets for 75. Lagden (26*) carried his score to 52 on Saturday, a good and chanceless innings, and Wood batted well for 36. Set 208 to win, M.C.C. had 3 down for 34 before lunch. Afterwards Kidd and Jessop hit up 56 together in 25 minutes, the latter’s 45 including 9 fours ; the rest did little, though a brief stand of 29 by Cuthbertson and Mignon for the ninth wicket made it look possible the Light Blues should be defeated. They won by 28 runs eventually, however. The match was a very even one, there being a difference of only 37 runs between the highest and lowest innings’ total. C a m b r id g e U n i v e r s i t y . Kidd, playing at Lord’s for M.C.C., his place being taken by M H. C. Doll. A thunderstorm shortened play by three-quarters of an hour on Thursday, when the chief features of the cricket were a capital 84 in 105 minutes out of 126 by Bowley, who hit 7 fours, and with Pearson put up 76 before a wicket fell, and good bowling by Tarrant and Clarke. Robertson and Tarrant made 76 for Middlesex’s first wicket—a curious coincidence—and at the close the visitors were 80 for 3. No play took place on Friday, and on Saturday Middlesex got 011 top at once, and stayed there. Tarrant and J. W. Hearne had another productive partnership— 169 in 105 minutes—the Anglo-Australian batting 195 minutes for his no, with only one chance, at 90, and the Harlington man a little over 2 hours for his 103* (one six, 10 fours). The only real stand in Worcestershire’s second was one of 54 (in 35 minutes) for the fourth wicket by Bowley and the Dudley amateur, B. G. Stevens. Bowley was top scorer in each innings, and made 127 of 288 from the bat scored by his side in the match. MiddJesex won by an innings and 21 runs. 103 P. F. Warner, Hendren (E.), 34 Murrell, and Hearne (J. T.), did not bat. Fry 75*) on June 27. ESSEX v. KENT. At Leyton, July 2, 3, and 4. Except for the absence of Davies and Bristowe the home side were pretty much at full strength, and Kent only lacked Day. Essex made a good start on Thursday, but had the Kentish fielders’ mistakes to thank in some measure for this. The scoring was neyer fast, and at times was very slow indeed. Russell and Gillingham took nearly 2 hours to add 80 for the second wicket. Fane and Perrin put on 117 in about the same time for the fourth, the old Carthusian then being out to a capital running catch by Hatfeild. At call of time Perrin was 90*, the total 279 for 5, made in )2o minutes. There was half-an-hour’s play on Friday; no wicket fell, 17 runs were added, and Perrin reached his 100. On Saturday, on a pitch which never became difficult, owing to the fact that the wind dried it before the sun got fairly to work, 61 were added in 40 minutes, and then the innings was declared. Perrin, who batted on all three days, was 4 hours at wickets, gave no chance, and hit 2 fives and 10 fours. The earlier Kent batsmen, with Hardinge as mainstay, made so stout a resistance that a follow-on never appeared probable. Hardinge made his chanceless 109 in 165 minutes, hitting 15 fours : and Seymour, playing with marked care, helped him to add 100 for the second wicket. At one time first innings’ points for Kent appeared possible, but the later batsmen could do little with Douglas, and Essex bagged the points. E s s e x . First Innings.
