DE TRAFFORD S Played at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, June 29 and 30. L e i c e s t e r s h i r e . XII. YORKSHIRE v. ESSEX. At Leeds, June 29 and 30, July 1. Yorkshire had to play without Hirst and D. C. F. Burton. They brought in Oldroyd again, and gave Whiting another trial. Essex had fared north without Fane, Turner, Gillingham, Louden, and Davies. C. S. Richardson, the Witham captain, who had shown good form for the second XI v. Cheshire, was included in the team, and Buckenham played for the first time this season. The Yorkshire batting fell far below its usual level ; indeed, only Wilson saved the side from utter collapse. The Scarborough mail was missed twice ; but he batted in determined style, hit 9 fours, and made more than half the runs. Russell and Carpenter sent up 51 before the first Essex wicket fell; but no one else really got going. The score at the close was 139 for 6. On the Tuesday the continued partnership of Douglas and Richardson brought the score level with that of the home side before the seventh wicket fell, after an addition of 36. Tremlin, with some luck, and Hills added 50 for the last wicket, and Essex had the substantial lead of 65. Whiting bowled very well indeed, but is scarcely that rara avis, a genuine fast bowler. Faring badly again in their second innings, Yorkshire had 5 men out for 125. Drake, batting pluckily and well, had had some assistance from Oldroyd, who helped him to add 39 for the fifth wicket. He got more from Booth, and the sixth added 56. Booth and his captain made another useful stand, and after the seventh wicket had fallen the latter and Dolphin added 65 unparted. Dolphin might have been caught at cover, but both, W'hite especially, batted well. At the close the total was 277 for 7. White was soon out when the game was resumed on Wednesday ; but Dolphin went on hitting, reached his 50 in 65 minutes, and carried his bat for a capital 56. Buckenham did good work w'ith the ball, and had 10 for 176 in the match. Set 249 to win, with plenty of time to get the runs in, Essex fared badly. They had lost 7 for 139 when rain stopped play. It was impossible to resume, and, like Lancashire at Birmingham, they had the luck to take first innings’ points when practically beaten. First Innings.
