Cricket 1914

3 16 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. J u l y 4, 1914. STAFFORDSHIRE v. NORTHUMBERLAND. At Stoke, June 29 and 30. The home side lacked Barnes and Morgan, and played Deyes instead of Sedgwick. Northumberland’s team was far from representative, Meldon, Stanger-Leathes, Arkwright, Hunting, and Nesbit all being absent. Wrathall, formerly of Gloucestershire, appeared for them for the first time. For their total of 263 Stafford shire were largely indebted to their captain, Bernard Meakin, and J. J. Awtv. Wilson, with 10 wickets in the match, was their chief bowler. But the Northumberland batting was quite unworthy of a side capable, even without full strength, of much better things. Staffordshire won by an innings and 103 runs. S t a f f o r d s h i r e . J. J. Awty, st Craig, b Hickton Nichols, c Wingham, b Towler J. S. Heath, b Hickton W. H. Twigg, c Skinner, b Milne J. In this, the first match of the St. Albans Week, the home side easily defeated a moderate M.C.C. team. Titchmarsh, as usual, topped the score for his side, and Frank Mitchell was the M.C.C.’s chief run-getter. M.C.C. First Innings. Second Innings. H. B. Oxford played Colman and Rucker gave Howell a rest and left out Burton. The M.C.C. side, without being a great one, was pretty good at all points. They batted first, but except while Lawton was in never scored very fast, the Oxford bowling being quite good. A. C. Wilkinson, playing against his ’Varsity, batted 160 minutes for 64. He and King added 83 for the third wicket, quite the best stand of the innings. White was hurt, and Knott took his place behind the wicket. At call of time Oxford had lost 4 for 95. Boswell made 36 of 51 while in. His innings was really the only good one on the side, for on Tuesday they were all out for 187, and neither Knott nor Bristowe was seen at his best. When the M.C.C. batted again, Anson showed fine form. Challenor helped him to send up 50 for the first wicket ; King made only 18 of 53 added for the third. Several others made runs ; but Anson’s 97, out of 187 while in, was the only innings of note. He batted 165 minutes, and always seemed on top of the bowling, driving well and strongly. He hit one five and 11 fours. At the close of the day’s play Oxford, set 305 to win, had lost Knott with only 3 scored. On Wednesday they collapsed utterly before Pegler and Mignon, and were all out for 77. M.C.C. thus won by 227 runs. M.C.C. First Innings. Hon. R. Stevens made 76* for Dudley, and P. O. Yates 66, and Smethwick lost by 147 runs after Dudley had declared with only 3 wickets down. H a n d s w o r t h W o o d easilv beat Kidderminster, R. I. Scorer getting 55 and J. P. Lloyd taking 6 for 66 for the winners. Wilkinson’s 94 "was a big factor in Mitchell and Butler’s defeat of West Bromwich Dartmouth. May and June. Up to the end of June 99 centuries had been registered in first-class cricket, as compared with 103 to the same date last year, 95 in 1912, and 107 in 1911. Tarrant (on June 15), J. W . Hearne (June 16), Philip Mead (June 16), Hobbs (June 19), and Frank Woolley (June 30) have reached four-figure totals. By the end of June in 1913 Mead, Quaife, Woolley, and Hobbs (in the order given) had done so. In 1912 only three names were on the list at the same date— those of C. G. Macartney, Hayes, and Mead. In 1911 there were six—Vine, James Seymour, Hayward, Makepeace, Denton, and C. J. B. Wood. S u n d e r l a n d (W. S. Piper 44*, S. Smith 5 for 41) easily accounted for Seaham Harbour. Philadelphia (239—J. Heath 68, T. Teasdale 51) still more easily beat Hendon (93), Smith taking 5 for 38. Boldon and Whitburn drew. James, the Notts man, made 69* for the latter. Wearmouth (146—Rothery 46, H. P. Clode 38) had a good tussle with Burnmoor (108—Weight 30). J. W. Bell took 5 for 11 for the losers, and Clode 5 for 46 for the winners.
