Cricket 1914
J u l y 4, 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 313 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. At Gloucester, June 25, 26, and 27. The home side left out Gange. who has been very disappointing, and played two Gloucester City men» T. Rust, and the professional, Ellis. They had Jessop ; but for once he did nothing. Lancashire were still without Dean. Though very slow, Langdon and Dipper did good service by an opening partnership of 80 (in just on 2 hours), but after they were parted only Nason, who hit up 37 in 55 minutes, seemed able to do anything with Whitehead, who bowled really well. When the Red Rose brigade batted Hornby left at 16, but Makepeace and John Tyldesley added 80, and at call of time the score was 106 for 2. On Friday John Tyldesley was out for 63 (105 minutes, 6 fours). He and Makepeace gave no chance ; but Sharp (100 minutes, 10 fours), William Tyldesley (135 minutes), and Huddleston (67 in 45 minutes, including a six and 12 fours) all had some luck, and the westerners’ fielding was again below par. Huddleston and William Tyldesley added 109 for the ninth wicket, the biggest stand of the innings. In the home side’s second innings only two batsmen made any show. Langdon, who appears to have run into form again after a very bad spell, made his 62 in 85 minutes, and he and Smith added 101 for the second wicket. Smith was 77* at the end of the day, when the score was 160 for 6. He only added 4 011 Saturday, when everyone hoped to see him get his first century for the county. Batting hours, he made most of his runs, which included 12 fours, by cuts and leg hits. He has come on wonderfully, and should be a big asset in the future. Whitehead again bowled in telling style, and in the match had 12 for 115. Lancashire won by an innings and 33 runs. G l o u c e s t e r s h i r e . First Innings. Second Innings. A v e r y similar game was that between Old Olavians (230 for 4, dec. —D. Oake 101, W. J. Williams 68—these two put on 120 for the second wicket) and Bromley Town (148 for 5-—C. F. W. Gedney, 54, and P. Cording 54, sending up 98 before a w'icket fell). Oake’s was quite a good knock. He hit 16 fours. A n d another drawn game with like features was that between Denbigh (264 for 7, dec.—Smith 88, Dunthom 67) and Putney (142 for 4—Denman 50*). WINCHESTER v. ETON. At Winchester, June 26 and 27. After a moderate start Eton got well on top, thanks mainly to their captain, Rawstome, who showed commendable restraint while restraint was necessary, but hit hard later, to Crossman’s dashing 55 (9 fours), and to a forcible innings by Hambro, who, played for his bowling and going in late, hit up 81 (10 fours). Nugent and Vane-Tempest put up 46 for the first wicket; Crossman and Nugent added 56, Christy and Hambro 77, and Foster and Hambro 76. The earlier Wykehamist batsmen collapsed before Johnstone’s fast bowling, five being out for 62. Gordon-Brown and Buck added 41 ; but at the close 7 were out for 140, and the home team seemed in hopeless plight. Yet so good was the recovery made on Saturday that the match ended in a draw rather in their favour. The innings closed for 182, and they had to follow on. Buck had some luck, but played an invaluable innings, and with Gregson helping him in a stand of 72 the arrears were hit off with 5 w'ickets to fall. Eight were down for 251 when Wells-Cole joined Williams. By really excel lent cricket these two added 143 in 85 minutes. The upshot was that Eton were put in to get 201 in 100 minutes. They went gallantly for the runs, and came near disaster in their effort to get them ; but Nugent’s coolness saved his side, and at the close there were still 4 wickets outstanding. E t o n .
