It is a question whether a University side is as big a drawing power at Horsham as a county team ; but Thursday, when fine, is always a good day there, and about 3000 attended. Except that Albert Relf displaced Tate, Sussex played the same side which had so nearly brought off a surprise victory over Hants ; Cambridge substituted Vincent for Mulholland, and left out Browne of the twelve who played at Eastbourne. The pitch was very fast, and most of the batsmen appeared in difficulties by reason of its pace. Lagden and Riley added 59 in 35 minutes, and Calthorpe played a capital innings of 45, staying an hour, and hitting 7 fours ; but the other Light Blue batsmen only mustered 45 among them. Vine played havoc with the tail. Holloway, sent in first for once, and Robert Relf failed to stay ; but then Vine and Wilson, without ever forcing the pace, added 89 in 70 minutes, and after Jupp and Albert Relf had fallen to fine catches in the slips Chaplin and Bowley added 44, the colt going just before call of time, when the total was 174 for 7. On Friday Cox and his skipper quickly added 40, and with Vincett in runs came freely, 45 being added before Chaplin ran himself out for the top score of the match. Left nearly 100 in arrears, the Light Blues, save for Vincent, Wood, and Saville, failed completely before Albert Relf, and Sussex won by 9 wickets. C a m b r id g e U n i v e r s i t y . Whether the Navy side was repre sentative it would be hard to say ; certainly the Army lacked some of their best. The sailors batted nearly all day on Thursday. They lost 3 for 43 ; but Irwin and Wright then added 86. Harrison and Evans forced the pace, and put on 125 in 75 minutes. The last four men all made runs, and the total reached 380. Six for none overnight, the Army took their score to 277 on Friday. Johnston played in something like his best form, Bush and he adding 99 for the second wicket ; and Yates lashed out for 66, made in under 40 minutes, and including a six and 9 fours. Major Wilson, the Army skipper, bowled well when the Navy batted again, and for a time the senior service seemed to be slipping back ; but Harrison hit up 31 in half-an-hour, and Wright made 2 sixes and 5 fours in his 57, the result of 80 minutes’ batting, so that at the end of the day they were 275 on with 4 to go. Bartley and Campbell again showed form on the last morning, and the Army were put in to get 371 on a pitch that was scarcely as good as it had been. They started well, Johnston and Loyd sending up 79 before a wicket fell, and Bush and Tennyson adding 55 for the third wicket; but Cunliffe bowled capitally, and the rest did little. The Navy won by 170 runs, and well deserved their victory. R o y a l N a v y . First Innings. Second Innings. Lieut. P. H. Irwin, b Fawcus .. 66 b Wilson .. .. 17 Lieut. A. K.
