Cricket 1914

3°8 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. J u ly 4, 1914. The Score Book. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. SOMERSET. At Northampton, June 24 and 25. The home side lacked Sydney Smith : the visitors were without several of their best, White being doubtless the man they missed most. They had to field nearly all day on Wednesday. William Denton and Haywood added 167 for the second wicket after the first had fallen at 19. Denton batted 120 minutes for his 74, with 5 fours and a chance at 22 ; Haywood made his vigorous 107 (4 sixes, 9 fours) in 105 minutes without a chance. Thompson and East each gave Woolley some help ; but there was no other stand of note until Ryan joined the Kent-born man. Both hit finely, the Army player having 2 sixes and 4 fours in his 41 ; and they added 81 in 40 minutes. Woolley was out ninth for his first century in first-class cricket. He made his 103 in 145 minutes, hit a five and 10 fours, and gave no chance till a few minutes before he was out. Somerset had half-an-hour’s batting, and lost the Rippon twins with only 9 scored. On Thursday, though the wicket was still practically perfect, they cracked up badly. There was nothing to dignify with the name of a stand in their first innings, though Hylton-Stewart stayed 85 minutes for his 25 : in the second Hyman top-scored, also batting 85 minutes. Hope hit up 34 in a quarter of an hour, and Sydney Rippon and Hylton-Stewart added 40 for the fourth wicket after three had fallen for 21. Thompson did not go on in this innings. Northants won by an innings and 127 runs. N o r t h a m p t o n s h i r e . J. S. Denton, lbw, b Robson 12 W. H. ESSEX II v. CHESHIRE. At Witham, June 24 and 25. Essex’s second string, captained by J. C. Round, and including John Douglas’s brother, C. H., P. Campbell, E. C. Coleman (who has played for Kent II), and Hills, who has been so disappointing for the first team, made a capital start in the Second Class Championship by defeating Cheshire easily. The visitors did poorly in their first innings, but showed to much greater advantage in their second, Coomber, Willmer, Hewitt, and Hope all playing up well. Richardson, Snell, and Guy all played good cricket for the new side, and Hills was very effective with the ball. Hope again bowled well for Cheshire. Essex won by 8 wickets. C h e s h i r e . STAFFORDSHIRE. At Jesmond, Newcastle, June 24 and 25. Though lacking Barnes, Staffordshire had an attack which proved all too deadly for Northumber land, as it had done for Durham two days earlier. J. S. Heath, the young Porthill Park player, made top score for his side, and took the last three Northumberland wickets in the first innings at a cost of only one rim. At call of time on the first day the northern county, with 4 wickets down in their second innings, were still 10 runs behind. Very few more were added 011 Thursday, and the visitors won by 9 wickets. Lagden. A. C. Wilkinson, and G. L. Jackson) on Thursday in last week, scoring 273 for 8, dec. (G. A. Dury 51, W. R. McClintock 49, R. G. de Uphaugh 44) to 138 (G. L. Jackson 51). There were actually 70 extras in the school’s total ! On the Saturday, though, the school was easily beaten by I Z., who replied to Harrow’s 138 with 282 (A. J. Evans 72, A V. Drummond 70). H u m p h r ie s , the Derbyshire stumper, who appears to have been stood down from the county side lately in favour of Beet, scored 135 for M .C.C. v. Highgate on Friday. On Saturday he reappeared for the county.
