298 THE WORLD OF CRICKET J u ly 4, 19 14 . Blues. S. Bere (Oxford X I of 1851), and sung at the Jubilee Dinner, 1877. Fifty years have sped since first, Some, whose names are household words Keen to win their laurel, Are beyond our reaching; Oxford round a Wordsworth clustered, They can only share our joy Cambridge under Jenner mustered, Secondhand, with some alloy— Met in friendly quarrel. . Print or letter teaching. Some whose presence oft recalls Happy recollections, Since have found their last long rest, Leaving us the memory blest Of their old affection. Giants of the olden time, Heroes of a later, Names all cricketers revere, Here as one joint band appear Pledging Alma Mater. ^et us then, of cricket days Long repeat the story ; Toast we here the noble game, Toast we those who made its fame, And upheld its glory. Bloodless, cheeriest contests these, In the field of cricket : Victory won by scoring runs, Sometimes fourers, sometimes ones, Or by flooring- wicket. Contests that have held their course Straight, tho’ not unbroken; Gathering, with every year, Force, of which our presence here, Is a cheering token. Would that all who played their part Could exchange new greeting ; But too well, alas ! we know, Time and space have dealt their blow At our happy meeting. Had the ’Varsity matches run an uninterrupted course, the present would have been the eighty-eighth, since they began in 1827. But there were no matches in 1828, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833, 1834, 1835, and 1837. It is, therefore, the eightieth. All but five of the matches (1829, Magdalen Ground, Oxford ; 1843, Bullingdon Green, Oxford ; 1846, Magdalen Ground again ; 1848, Magdalen Ground ; and 1850, Cowley Marsh, Oxford) have been played at Lord’s. Of the 79 matches played Cambridge have won 38, Oxford 33, the balance of 8 having been drawn. In the list of blues which follows the schools are arranged in order by number of places filled in both elevens. As this year’s teams are not definitely selected at time of writing, 1914 is left out of account, except that the names of blues available are distinguished by an asterisk (*). In cases where a man was at two schools, that from which he went up to the 'Varsity is considered as having the best claim to him, and his name is not given twice. Thus F. Marchant is credited to Eton (not Rugby), L. H. Gay to Brighton (not Marlborough), A. M. Sutthery to Oundle (not Uppingham), A. J. Lowth to Winchester (not Eton), W . H. Patterson to Harrow (not Chatham House, Ramsgate), J. C. Hartley to Tonbridge (not Marlborough), C. P. Wilson to Marlborough (not Uppingham), F. R. Evans to Rugby (not Cheltenham), A. H. C. Fargus to Haileybury (not Clifton), A. H. Evans to Clifton (not Rossall), A. F. Smith to Wellington (not Harrow), and R. H. de Montmorency to St. Paul's (not Cheltenham). For the main groundwork of the information given here the compiler has to thank Mr. J. D. Betham’s valuable Oxford and Cambridge Scores and Biographies. W ithout it the record would not be as complete, though he had himself gathered much of the information of this sort given therein before it came into his hands. The table which follows shows how the chief schools have been represented in the 79 matches played to date. All which filled 10 or more places are given.
