Cricket 1914

266 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. J u n e 20, 1914. WARWICKSHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. At Edgbaston, .June n , 12, and 13. L. Bates and Howell replaced G. W. Stephens and Hands in the home side, and Capt. Baggallay returned to his team, Wild standing down. After a capital start, Kinneir and Parsons putting up 43 for the first wicket, and Charles- wTorth and Parsons adding 59 for the second, the Warwickshire batting broke down, and the last 8 wickets only added 78. Parsons again showed how much he has improved, and though he never scored fast, his 52 taking 2i hours, he was always getting the ball in the middle of the bat. The Derbyshire batsmen could do nothing with Foster and Field, and at the finish had lost 6 wickets for 46. On Friday the innings closed for 71, the Warwickshire captain having^ the fine figures of 6 for 18. Runs never came easily in the home side’s second, Morton bowling really well, and had Parsons been taken in the long field at 2, as he should have been, the score might have proved but a meagre one. He and Quaife added 43 together, the best stand of the innings, and the little man batted 90 minutes for his patient 25. Derbyshire were set 253 to win, and lost Baggallay before time, when they had made 17. On Saturday Howell and Jeeves dismissed them for 127, Warwick shire thus winning by 125 runs after being on top practically throughout. W a r w ic k s h ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. Luckin, the ex-Hampshire pro., had 7 for 34 for the same side. F o r Walsall v. Mitchell and Butler’s Brammer took 5 for 36. For the brewery team Wilkinson had 6 for 62, doing the hat trick. For Dudley v. Stourbridge Maden lowered 7 for 14. I n the North Staffordshire League, though no century was made, there were more runs scored than on most Saturdays this season, W. Fitchford and J. S. Heath (Porthill Park v. Fenton), F. G. Beech (90, Tunstall v. Stone), B. Meakin (Stone v. Tunstall), J. Ankers (Silverdale v. Leek), and L. Evans (Norton v. Oldfields) passing 50. A m o n g the best bowlingjperformances were J. S. Heath’s 6 for 43 for Porthill, Sedgwick’s 6 for 40 (Knypersley v. Crewe Alexandra), Riley’s 7 for 68 for Oldfields, and Mills’s 5 for 21 (Burslem v. Stoke). T h e Bishop of Buckingham (7 and 8 ) played for M.C.C. v. Marl borough College last week. The title is correct, of course, but looks queer on a score-sheet. W. G., first in for Elthain, 42. Well done, the G.O.M. ! He has been much too modest lately, with a frequent place in the “ did not bat ” list. But it was warmer on Saturday. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY v. THE ARMY. At Fenner’s, June 11, 12, and 13. The visitors could not collect full strength, among prominent absentees being Major J. G. Greig, Capt. W. M. Turner, Capt. F. R. R. Brooke, and Capt. F. J. C. Wyatt. The only man in the Cambridge team not already a blue was Wood, Riley, Lagden, Baker, Fairbairn, and Woodroffe all returning to the side. Rain shortened play to two hours on Thursday, and during the whole time the military side were struggling hard for runs, the total being only 65 for 7 when early in the afternoon rain stopped play. The wicket played quite easily on Friday, and the later Army batsmen made a good resistance. Fawcus hit well, making his 56 in 80 minutes, and Thomson defended stubbornly, the eighth wicket adding over 70, and the ninth (Cowie, the old Cantab, lashing out) 35. The total was a far better one than had appeared likely. Davies and Lagden added 68 for the fourth Cambridge wicket, and Saville and Riley 70 for the sixth. The Light Blue captain took 75 minutes to reach his 50, but afterwards played very freely indeed, getting his second 50 in 30 minutes. At the close he was 141*, his single chance having been one in the country at 115. He hit 13 fours. On Saturday the innings was declared at once. The Army made no show at all in their second innings, and soon after lunch were beaten by an innings and 80 runs. T h e A r m y . First Innings. Second Innings. W. E.
