Cricket 1914

254 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. JUNp 20, 19 14 . In being chosen for England in the Test T rial match at L o rd ’s in what is really only his second season in first-class cricket (for he only played in a few matches at the end of 1912) Geary has won high honour already. H e was but a lad of nineteen when he played his first m atch for the county— against Worcestershire a t Leicester #n July 11, 1913. He took 2 for 40 and 2 for 30 then ; altogether th at season he bowled in 5 innings, and had 8 w ickets for 173. On paper his record meant little or nothing ; but those who had seen him and were capable of judging did not hesitate to say that Leicestershire had made a find. His first big performance was 5 for 33 against Lancashire at Old Trafford, in his third match last year. No one played him easily, and of his 24 overs 12 were maidens. In successive matches a little later he took 4 for 54 (in an innings o f 300) v. Yorkshire at Leeds, he and Shipman getting down 5 for 58 at the outset, and 7 for 58 and 4 for 59 v. Worcester shire (252 and 231) at Leicester. On a w icket th at helped the bowlers a bit, though Rhodes and others triumphed over its difficulties, he was also seen to advantage with 5 for 86 (total 405) against Yorkshire at Leicester. In August he bowled very finely v. Surrey at Leicester (6 for 64 in a to tal of 246) and v. K ent at Canterbury (5 for 61 and 3 for 88 in totals of 201 and 349). Altogether he sent down nearly 750 overs, and took 79 w ickets at a cost of 26-01 each. The figures are not specially rem arkable; but figures are n ot everything, and even from a merely statistical point of view the amount of work done and the amount of success achieved were more than creditable to a lad of twenty. George Geary was born at Barwell on July 9, 1893. He learned his cricket w ith the local club, and had no engage m ent prior to th at on the county staff. He did big things in second eleven matches before he got his trial with the first team, taking 5 for 10 v. Derbyshire II, and 12 for 11 ti. W arw ickshire II. His pace is medium, his length good, and he has command of break. He fields capitally, and his skipper tells me th at though he has done little as a batsman yet he has distinct possibilities in th a t branch of the game. J. N.
