J u n e 6, 19 14 . THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 223 N O R T H U M B E R L A N D v. D U RH AM . A t N ewcastle-on-Tyne, June i and 2. The home side had what looked like a strong team ; but except for Milne they all seemed helpless before H arry (the ex-Lancastrian) and Morris, and were all out for 88. D urham , on paper only m oderately represented, scored fast and freely. Bradford, their best bat, missed his century b y 7 runs ; but A shley hit up 164 in 150 m inutes, 31 fours being included. H arry followed up his excellent bowling b y a score of 82. A t call of time the total was 487 for 8. Bradford declared on Tuesday morning. Northum berland played up well in their second innings. Stanger- Leathes, the old Shirburnian, batted over 3^ hours without a chance ; Meldon hit hard for 76, m ade in 70 m inutes and including 3 sixes and seven 4’s, but had lots of luck. Durham won by an innings and 41 runs. N o r t h u m b e r l a n d . First Innings. C. F. Stanger-Leathes, lbw, b H arry R. G. Elliott, b H arry J. S. Nesbit, b H arry W ingham, b Morris G. L. Several Lancashire League players were given trials in the home team , and a fifth Tyldesley (H.) made his first appearance in cricket of any note. A busy and fairly even first day saw 21 wickets fall, Lancashire being 90 on with 9 to go at its end. J. C/ Hollins and F. L. Eaton batted well, and Spencer and B. W illiam s— whether the W illiams engaged at Lord’s is not known— bowled effectively. W illiam s put in some more good bowling on Tuesday : but it was chiefly due to J. A . Harrison that the home team were so cheaply dismissed that Cheshire needed only just over 200 for victory. V. Hope played finely for them, and they pulled through b y one w icket, though the issue was in doubt right up to the last moment. L a n c a s h ir e II. First Innings. Second Innings. J. While everyone else failed on an easy pitch, Norman Riches, the Glam organ skipper, played fine cricket. Nine wickets were down for 93 ; there only remained Creber, usually a gift to the first straight ball. But the last wicket added 125, Creber actually scoring 42*. Riches batted 3 ! hours for his solid 109, and gave only one difficult chance. The Glam organ fielding was not goodr and most of the men who m ade runs for Surrey were missed at least once. Sandham and R u tty scored at a great pace, adding 100 for the fourth w icket in 45 minutes. A t call of time the South Wales team were 15 behind, with two men out in their second innings. Three or four men played useful innings on Tuesday ; but 110 one reached 50, and Surrey won by 4 wickets after being on top practically all through the game. G l a m o r g a n . First Innings.
