There were four changes in the Cam bridge side, Mulholland and Calthorpe playing for the first time this season, while Leggatt (Eton), who has done such big things in the. trial matches, and W hite, the old W ellingburian, were included. The display given was a very disappointing one. Drake had everyone more or less in trouble, and after a promising stand of about 50 by Morrison and Lagdon, cut short just as it looked like realising some thing substantial, a slump ensued. All were out for 131. The light was bad, but there was little other excuse for the poor display. Sm ith, the new left-hander, had a show after his success against Surrey II, but failed to take a wicket. Before time the county side had run up 130 for 4, Kilner getting his 52 in 70 minutes, and Booth batting 75 for his 32*. H e and H irst added 128 for the fifth wicket in all, both batting freely against bowling very frequently changed, Saville making the most of the forces at his disposal. The ultim ate total of 296 was less than had at one time looked likely ; but it proved more than sufficient, Riley, who hit hard as usual, being the only man to offer any considerable resistance when the ’ V arsity batted again. Y o rk shire won b y an innings and 6 runs. C a m b r id g e U n iv e r s it y . First Innings. G. B. Davies, c Drake, b Booth .. 6 J. S. F. Morrison, c W'hite, b Rhodes 33 R- B. A' Wilkinson and Rushby, the captain injured, the bowler unw ell ; H ayward skippered the team. Foster won the toss, and W arwickshire started very well, Kinneir and Parsons sending up 65 in an hour, while the score was 113 with only one w icket down. B ut the side were all out for 226, H itch doing the hat trick at the expense of Sm ith, Jeeves, and Hands. Parsons, who batted 165 m inutes for his 87, played the fast bowler better than anyone else, though not too com fortable with the slower stuff. He hit 9 fours, and gave no chance. Before time Surrey had lost 2 for 47, and H obbs had taken 20 off an over from Foster. Throughout the day the light was bad, and a drizzling rain made the ball slippery during most part of the time. Hobbs got off the m ark quickly on Friday morning, and reached his 50 after 45 m inutes at wickets. He was driving with tremendous force, getting nearly all his runs in front of the wicket, and treating Foster with especial severity. He m oved on to 100 in 100 minutes, the decrease in his rate of scoring being due to Quaife, with whose bowling he was never quite at ease. Harrison, who had been playing second fiddle quite contentedly, only made 25 of the 153 added for the third wicket. D ucat took up H arrison’s role, and when at last Hobbs was bowled in lashing out rather w ildly at Foster the scoring books showed that the crack had made 183 while his four partners scored 41 ! Tw o sixes, a five, and 21 fours were included. He gave no chance, and only made two faulty strokes in his stay of 170 minutes. Fender came along now, and m ade hay of the tired bowling, which D ucat, however, seemed to find quite difficult. The old Pauline, missed at 31, reached his 50 in 40 minutes. He and D ucat added 129 in 70 minutes. W ith Abel in, the W arwickshire bowlers had a still worse time. Fender reached 100 in 85 m inutes, Abel 50 in 30, and they added 121 in 45. A ltogether Fender’s innings of 140 only lasted 120 minutes, and the three chances he gave did not detract greatly from its merits, for he was forcing the pace all the time. He hit a six, a five, and 25 fours. Abel gave no chance in m aking his 87, batted an hour, and hit a six, a five, and 12 fours. Charlesworth, the seventh bowler tried, had three of the last four wickets very cheaply, and the innings closed for 541. W arwickshire had 26 for o up when call of time came. In the morning Kinneir and Parsons were not separated until 58 had been scored ; but afterwards Foster alone offered any resistance to the bowling of A bel and Fender, who on replacing H itch and Sm ith carried all before them . Surrey won soon after one o’clock by an innings and 197 runs. W a r w ic k s h ir e . First Innings. Kinneir, c Fender, b Abel ..
