SOU TH -W E STERN D ISTR IC T S XV . A t Oudtshoorn, November 17 and 18. This match very much resembled the first between the sides, scoring, however, ruling somewhat lower. No colonial batsman distinguished himself, Barnes being practically unplayable in the second innings. Olivier, who took 4 for 47, was the best of the home bowlers. Bird kept wicket, and caught five batsmen in the second innings. Hobbs and Strudwick were given a rest, and the team ’s manager, Mr. Ivor Difford, played. M.C.C. won by an innings and 60 runs. S o uth -W ester n D ist r icts . SECOND MATCH v. SOU TH -W E STERN D ISTR ICTS XV. A t Robertson, November 14 and 15. No English team had played at Robertson before. The town was preferred to Mossel B ay, as being more central. The importance of the match was not great, of course, the only well-known player figuring on the local side being E. Olivier, the Repton and Cambridge bowler of a few years ago, who later played once or twice for Hamp­ shire. Hobbs was responsible for a finely-hit 107 in 130 minutes (2 sixes, 12 fours) ; Mead made 78 in 2 hours ; Bird had some luck, but hit well. On the second morning the innings was at once declared. O f the locals only De Villiers, who in the first innings went in with one wicket down and carried his bat for 74, and Murray, who made 49 in the second innings, could do anything with the bowling. C A PE PROV INCE . ^ 1 1 A t Port Elizabeth, November 21 and 22. A most dis­ appointing game. Obviously determined to put a good side in the field, the local authorities played only one of their own men— Porter. Hearne, Hands, Lewis, Blanckenberg, and Mars came from Cape Town, Cross, Johnson, and Norton from the Border, and Tapscott and Ling from Kimberley. There was scarcely a man on the side who had no claim for consideration in the choosing of a South African team ; but the weak Eastern Province eleven could scarcely have fared worse. Hobbs alone made a big score ; he played all the bowlers with consummate ease, and hit a six and 19 fours in his 170. Hearne helped him to add 130 for the second wicket. A t close of play on the Friday the total was 374 for 9. The match was all over on Saturday. Hands played a very solid innings; Porter and Ling hit well, and Cross showed good form ; but no one reached 30 in the Province’s first innings, and in the second only Hands and Norton scored doubles, the rest being quite helpless against Barnes.
