Cricket 1914
M a y 30, 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 197 There were other matches of some public importance which cannot be regarded as first-class— such, for instance, as the Australians’ games on even terms with Poverty Bay and Wanganui, Doth minor asso ciations within the areas of major provinces, Nelson v. Marlborough, and Marlborough v. Wellington (a scratch team). In the 20 games 136 players (including the Australians) took part. By way of comparisoi . it may be mentioned that 134 players (including the New Zealand tourists) played in the 16 first-class games of the Australian season. To give the figures of the whole 136 is scarcely practicable ; but a fairly comprehensive selection of them is made here, all who played four or more innings being included in the batting, and all who took 5 or more wickets in the bowling averages. One believes that no attempt has ever been made before (even in New Zealand) to give such figures as these, the papers of each province occupying themselves almost exclusively with the cricket of that province. The thing is worth doing, for N.Z. cricket is on the up-grade, and within a few years may be accepted as only slightly inferior to that of South Africa, though for many years to come it can scarcely be expected to attain the English or Australian standard. For comment on the averages there is little space. Among the bats men with over 40 per innings Patrick, who did exceptionally well, is the only genuine New Zealander ; but there are plenty below that figure who show good results. In bowling Wilson, of Canterbury, a new man, Saunders, and Bennett show up well. It will be understood that the averages are compiled only from the 20 matches of which a list is given. Canterbury, holders of the Plunket Shield, successfully defended the trophy four times, and still retain it. BATSMAN. SIDE. INNS. N.O. R. A. H.S. V. T. Trumper .. Aust. Tm. IO O 839 83-90 293 V. S.
