GLOUCESTERSHIRE. At Northampton, May 15 and 16. As usual in May, the Western county could not put full strength in the field. G. F. Collett, who has not played for some years, reappeared ; J. F. Lawson was given a rtrial: and the Wimbledon man, M. A. Green, appeared in place of Nason. The home side still lacked East, and played H. G. Beers, of Towcester, for the first time. Smith won the toss, and William Denton and Woolley put up 59 for the first partnership. Smith himself made a brilliant 70 (a dozen fours, chiefly hard drives) out of •97 added for the third wicket with Denton, who thereafter kept up his end to see five partners dismissed pretty quickly, and then to find aid in Buswell, with whom he put on 61 for the ninth wicket. The old Wellingburian played right through the innings, batting 4I1. 50111. Only 6 fours were included in his 108 ; but for three hours he played practically perfect cricket of the defensive type, and the chances he gave afterwards seemed to be due to his having tired. Denton is not of powerful physique, it should be remembered. Gange and Dennett did most of the bowling, and at one stage the former took 3 wickets in 2 overs, while Dennett had no luck, all the chances being off his bowling. That awkward half-hour at the end of the day •saw Gloucestershire lose their best three wickets for only 25 runs. On Saturday the remainder collapsed before the bowling of Wells .and Thompson. Following on, they looked like being out for even a smaller score than in their first innings, for of the leading batsmen •on the side only Dipper made any stay. Six wickets were down for 31 ; but upon Green’s joining Dipper a great effort was made. The two added 103 runs together, both scoring fast. Dipper hit a six and 3 fours, Green 2 sixes and 4 fours. When once they were parted, hovvever, the game soon came to an end, Northants winning by an innings and 61 runs. N o r t h a m p t o n s h ir e . W. H. Denton, not out Woolley (C. At Fenner’s, May 14, 15, and 16. Cambridge played the side which had gone under to Hampshire, and Middlesex that which had beaten Oxford, Warner still being an absentee. Davies and Lagden made a useful stand of 58 for the ’Varsity’s second wicket ; Riley hit out hard, and Arnold again played w ell; but the total was quite a moderate one. Anson and Tarrant put up 84 before the county’s first wicket fell; Tarrant and Hearne added 58 for the second (just the same number as the Light Blues’ second had realised) ; and Hearne and Hendren put on 51 for the third. At the end of the day the total was 197 for 4. Tarrant batted n o minutes and hit 10 fours, but was rather badly missed in the country at 24. On Friday (when Saville had four bowlers on during the first four overs) Mann laid about him lustily, but the rest did little, and the visitors’ lead was after all only 76. The ’Varsity started well, and had reduced the deficit to 26 before their first wicket (that of Davies) fell, while Morrison and Lagden put them 24 ahead before the former was out. Then, however, Littlejohn’s bowling brought about a sudden collapse, taking three wickets in five overs. Saville, who played really well, and Riley stopped the rot and added 58. Middlesex were set 191 for victory, and had 80 up without a wicket down before call of time. On Saturday they won easily, the score being 96 before Tarrant and Anson were parted. The amateur and Hearne then added 47, when Anson left, after 90 minutes of good defensive cricket. Hearne and Hendren hit off the 48 needed without being parted, the county thus winning by 8 wickets.
