Whatever consola tion those he has left behind may find in the knowledge th a t their grief is shared, though in a more distant manner, b y all who care for fine cricket and good sportmanship, is surely theirs. Prowse’s lines on another great cricketer— a man of very different type, but held in affection b y all— haunt one’s memory as one thinks of him, and especially one line : “ L ightly lie the turf upon thee, kind and stalwart Alfred Mynn ! ” M r. K e n n e d y , who last season was kept out of the field till the campaign was half over through an illness and a consequent operation, has made a capital start, w ith a bag of wickets in every match, and a specially good performance at Leicester. H is county has a long programme, and it is quite on the cards that he m ay take as many wickets as anyone in 1914. There is, of course, the chance th at overwork should lessen his efficiency. Newman, like others before him, appears to be developing into a batsman to the detriment of his bowling powers. On the other hand, a good deal more may be expected of A. Jaques ; Brown is always likely to get j.vickets when pitches are hard ; Major Greig is a more than useful change; and there are Remnant and others. L e i c e s t e r s h i r e has rather a long thin tail just now. Some day Geary, Sidwell, or Skelding may astonish us all by a 50— or even, like Walter Mead and Fielder in the past, by a century— but a t present the county’s innings seem to be as good as over at the fall of the seventh or eighth wicket. Shipman, like Newman— though his rate of scoring is very different— seems to be training on into a batsman. T h e Edgbaston ground, which belongs to Lord Calthorpe, is likely to become the property of the Warwickshire C.C.C., who propose to acquire it b y the proceeds of an issue of 4! per cent, debentures. K i n n e i r , who has not had much luck since his great doings in 19 11 took him into the M.C.C. team to Australia, has made a good start this year, w ith a level hundred as his first innings. As he takes his benefit during the season, this is all for the best. S o m e t h i n g of a coincidence was presented b y the first innings totals in the three big matches begun on Monday.
