Cricket 1914

M a y i 6 , 1914. THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 157 LEICESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. At Leicester, May 9, 11, and 12. The visitors lacked A. C. MacLaren, who was prevented at almost the last minute from playing, and the home side W. N. Riley, now in residence at Cambridge. Heap was taken unwell after fielding for an hour, and William Tyldesley was allowed to replace him. (What will the M.C.C. say ?) The great features of Leicestershire’s innings were a capital 79 by Coe, who seems to have come back to his best form, and some excellent bowling by Ralph Whitehead. Coe batted nearly two hours, made no mistake, and hit 11 fours. Shipman’s slashing 30 included 5 fours. At call of time Lancashire had 98 for 4 up, Makepeace and Sharp having added 75 for the third wicket. The innings closed for 168 on Monday, Geary having a good analysis. In their second venture Leicestershire had to bat on a pitch affected by rain and sun, and King alone showed to much advantage. When play was resumed on Tuesday, with the home county 116 up and 4 to go, it was anybody’s game. King’s steady and workmanlike batting improved his side’s prospects, and Sidwell gave him good help by keeping up an end for 40 minutes. Lancashire were set 184. By lunch time, with John Tyldesley, Make peace, and Sharp all out and only 57 scored they were, in a doubtful plight. Afterwards only William Tyldesley did much, and Leicester shire ran out winners by 34 runs. They have not often beaten Lan cashire, and this victory, after a hard struggle, should do them good. Bowers, who top-scored with a modest 22 and took 5 for 18. Jackson helped with 4 for 26. For Wallsend Stapleton had 5 for 36. F a r and away the biggest score of the day was G. H. Watson’s 98 for Northumberland County Club v. Benwell. The County Club’s total, 195 for 8, was also the leger one. Clifton (50*) helped Watson to add 123. The latter flogged the bowling mercilessly, only taking 45 minutes to make his 98. He hit 4 sixes and 12 fours. Thescorewas 18 for 5 when he and Clifton came together, 141 for 6 when they were parted. Their side won. W in g h a m took 6 for 20 (St. George’s v. South Northumberland), and J. Carr 5 for 12 for the opposition. The only closely fought match was that between North Durham (67) and Ryton (74). At Derby, May 9, 11, and 12. The visitors were engaged in an uphill struggle from the very outset. They batted feebly on a soft and never difficult wicket, and their bowling was no better than their batting. Slater seemed almost unplayable, but might not have had such figures had he been met with more resolution. Oliver and Cadman passed the Worcestershire total by 21 runs before the first wicket fell, and at call of time Derbyshire had 176 for 2 on the board. On Monday only about 2| hours’ play took place, owing to rain. Nearly everybody scored, Slater and Chapman adding 49 together, and Chapman and Forester 54. Baggallay was enabled to declare, and the visitors made 14 for no wicket in the quarter of an hour’s play possible thereafter. On Tuesday the sun shone upon a wet wicket, and any offchance the visitors had had of saving the game was gone. Slater again bowled well, and Bracey took 3 wickets very cheaply. Derbyshire won by an innings and 158 runs. DERBYSHIRE v. WORCESTERSHIRE. W o r c e s t e r s h ir e . First Innings. Bowley, b Morton .. .. .. 9 Collier, c Baggallay, b Morton .. 21 M. K. In T r in id a d club matches on April 25 the veteran Constantine, who was here with the West Indian teams of 1900 and 1906, scored r06 for Victoria v. Thistle, and P. Cummings, a young player of promise, made the same number for Shamrock v. Diego Martin.
