H e r b e r t C a r p e n t e r , who last season played for his native county, Cambridgeshire, has been engaged as coach to the young players and head of the ground staff by the Essex C.C .C ., to whom he rendered good service for so many years. A t the request of Messrs. Duke & Son, we have pleasure in printing a copy of the letter sent by the Masters to the Amalga mated Society of Cricket Ball Makers, in a final effort to end the strike. A. P.— Yes, back numbers are in stock— at present. But there is a heavy run on them, and we shall probably have to put the price up in a week or two. Meanwhile No. 1 can be had for 3d., Nos. 1 and 2 for s£d., Nos. 1, 2, and 3 for 8d., Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 for iojd., and Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 for is. ijd. [ c o p y .] To Mr. F. Boorman (secretary). The Amalgamated Society of Cricket Ball Makers, I 35 >St. Mary’s Road, Tonbridge. D e a r S ir , — Your letter of May 4, with reference to the date when the advanced scale of wages, which has been provisionally agreed, should come into force, was submitted to a meeting of employers this evening. You are aware of the difficulties the employers have owing to the existing contracts, and th at an immediate rise of wages would cause a larger loss to them than they are prepared to face. After a very full discussion we have been unanimously authorised to make one final attempt to settle the difference between us. On condition that the members of your society will return to* work at once, and work loyally until August 29, the employers will pay the increased rate of wages as from Monday August 3 X»I 9 i 4 * We think it is only fair to the employers that before starting a prolonged war, of which none of us can foresee the result, you should submit this offer to a ballot of all your members. (Signed on behalf of the employers),. Yours faithfully, (Signed) D u k e & S o n . Tonbridge, May 5, 1914.
