Cricket 1914

THE WORLD OF CRICKET. M a y 16, 1914. C e n tu r ie s Scored in F ir s t= C la s s C r ic k e t in N ew Z e a la n d . T h is list is as complete as possible, and even includes two or three items doubtfully first-class (e.g., Crawshaw’s and Wolstenholme’s scores). No game where either side played odds is taken into account, and matches between the minor provinces (Marlborough, Nelson, Taranaki, and Westland) and district associations are not reckoned. Southland is accepted as a major province, since it has had regular fixtures with Otago for 20 years past. B y N e w Z e a l a n d P l a y e r s . A. P. Alloo, 101, Otago v. Suttill 43, N. Morice 36*, C. Powell 35), and got down 6 Hampstead wickets for 124 (Dr. R. Ingram 34*). On an over-watered wicket at Neasden scoring in the match between the home club and L. and N.W.R. ruled very low, Neasden winning by 14 runs— 57 to 43. Thev owed much to Walgrave, who scored 24 and took 5 for 15 ; W. Wreford (Devon) had the other 5 at a cost of 25. For the railway team Wilson took 6 for 25, Howard 4 for 25. C. J. Partridge scored 100* for Queen’s v. St. Catharine’s at Cam bridge on Tuesday, he and C. J. H. Treglown (Norfolk) putting up a good stand for the first wicket. Treglown made 58. Thanks mainly to F. S. Gillespie (58) and E. J. Bridger (7 wickets, 6 bowled), Dulwich (163) beat White House at Dulwich by 90 runs. Richmond put out Pallingswick for 37, R. E. Westmacott taking 8 wickets, all bowled, and replied with 209— F. Mason 40, G. A, Medcalf 31, four others between 20 and 30. A. J. Spelling hit up 106 for Ilford ; G. M. Louden took 6 wickets, and Woodford Wells went under by 157 runs after Ilford had declared at 242 for 8. T h e a n n u a l h a n d b o o k of that prosperous organisation, the North Staffordshire and District Cricket League, has reached us. Mr. S. Gleaves, a rare worker, is the League’s Secretary ; his address is 17r Frederick Street, Stoke-on-Trent. Burslem, Crewe Alexandra, Fenton, Knvperslev, Leek, Longton, Norton, Oldfields, Porthill Park, Silverdale, Stoke, Stone, and Tunstall are the clubs in the First Division ; in the Second are the second teams of all of these except Leek and Oldfields, together with Great Chell. T h e G r e a t W ' e st e rn R a il w a y C.C. (Hon. Sec., Mr. F. K. Honey- ball, C.G.M.O., Paddington, W.) have a capital programme for their forty-sixth season, which opened on Saturday last. They run three teams each Saturday. The first X I’s fixtures are with Hounslow, Bath, Slough. Clapham Ramblers, Wargrave, Westbourne Park Wanderers, Kilburn, West Drayton, Reading Biscuit Factory, Egham and Thorpe, Broxbourne. Hanwell Asylum, North London, Parson’s Green, W. & G ., and High Wycombe. Owing to a change of duties, Mr. C. E. Bridges is unable to continue the captaincy, and a former skipper in Mr. E. Gibbs resumes office, with Mr. C. E. G . Honeyball as vice-captain. All the old players will be available, and there is some promising new blood. . Improvements, adding, to the dressing- room accommodation, have been made in the pavilion at Castle Bar Park, and a substantial and well-built cottage has been erected for the head groundsjnan.
