136 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. M a y g. 1914. C r ic k e t in S o u t h A f r ic a . MATABELELAND v. MASHONALAND. There was a Sports’ Gala at Bulawayo at Easter, this interprovincial cricket match being one of its chief attractions. Unfortunately several of Mashonaland’s best could not make the journey, and Matabeleland had an easy victory— by an innings and ever so many runs. Leo Robinson, more than 20 years ago one of Natal’s best players, captained the winning side, and W. S. Taberer (younger brother of the Rev. H. M. Taberer, who played for Oxford, Essex, and South Africa in his day) the losers. Bourdillon, considered the best bat in Rhodesia, made 76 of the 168 for 3 at which the score stood when he was out, but was scarcely at the top of his form. Linnell and Robinson added 119 for the fifth wicket in 87 minutes. Linnell. who has made a lot of runs in club cricket this season, passed the century mark. Hopley hit well after a shaky start. The Mashonaland men, whose fielding had been erratic and their bowling weak, failed to distinguish themselves with the bat, and Herholdt and Bourdillon, with some slight help from others, put them out twice for very poor totals. M a t a b e l e l a n d . YORKSHIRE v, XV OF ROTHERHAM & DISTRICT. At Rotherham, May 2. About 3,000 spectators witnessed this one-day game. The last five Yorkshire wickets fell for 13 runs. When they batted again Booth was entertained to lobs by Willey, and hit three sixes off one over. Y o r k s h ir e . T. E. Bourdillon, b Robert— Van Rooyen, run out .. 0 son .. 76 F. J. V. Ja m e s M id d le t o n died at Newlands, Cape Town, on December 23. 1913. A left-handed bowler of very considerable ability, Middleton first made acquaintance with South Africa with his regiment, the East Yorkshire. The Cape Town C.C. bought him out of the army, and engaged him as their professional, and he stayed with them till the day of his death. This wras due to heart failure, following on severe attacks of asthma and bronchitis. Middleton was a Durham County man, but the date of his birth is not on record. He must have been over 50, however. His deeds in South African cricket were by no means small, though he never was a run-getter. Against Lord Hawke’s Team in 1895-6 he took 9 wickets for 130 (for South Africa at Port Elizabeth), 10 for 148 (for.Western Province at Cape Town), and 3 for 50 (for South Africa at Cape Town). For Western Province v. Transvaal in the Currie Cup final at Cape Towrn in 1897-8 he had 5 for 36 and 7 for 64, and it was largely due to his bowling that his side retained the cup that season. Among his analyses against Lord Hawke’s Second Team (1898-9) were 4 for 38, 5 for 51, and 4 for 18. When big cricket was resumed after the War he played in three matches v. Joe Darling’s Australian Team, and for Western Province took 10 for 123 against that doughty band. In 1903-4 he had 10 for 74 v. Griqualand West at Kimberley and 9 for 55 v. Border at Cape Town in Currie Cup matches. He twice visited England with South African sides— in 1894, when he took 83 wickets at under 16 runs each, and in 1904, when his 35 wickets cost nearly 25 each. After that time he dropped out of first-class cricket. M r . J. W is h a r t died during March in South Africa, of blackwater fever, contracted at Delagoa Bay some years ago. He played for Bechuanaland in the Tournament of 1886-7 at Kimberley, with some success as a bowler, taking 10 wickets for T22 in the three matches : and a couple of years later he twice appeared for Johannesburg teams against Major Warton’s English XI. In the first match he and G. Cooley, dead a good many years since, dismissed the tourists for 60. Wishart taking 5 for 24. At the start of the last innings England needed 136 to win ; Abel and Frank Hearne knocked off the runs unseparated. Mr. Cecil Rhodes had accepted two bets of 50 to 1 that the tourists would not win by 10 wickets, and he handed over the £100 thus won to Abel and Hearne. Mr. Wishart was, like Middleton, a left-handed bowler — Brine, st Campbell, b Joy 12 A. H. Christian, retired .. 102 — Gordon, not out .. 8 W.
