Rain shortened play in this match to such an extent that only about 6£ hours’ cricket took place, and a draw was naturally the result. W. A. Baker played a very creditable innings of 50 for the local side, and Stanley Brice, the captain, who only came in through the inability of Robinson to play, hit up 32 in very quick time. The features of the Australian innings were a stand of 131 by Trumper and Armstrong for the fourth wicket, and the bowling of Gibbes, who, put on as fourth change, took 5 wickets in 9 overs at a very cheap rate, though, as they included Trumper’s and Noble’s, they were scarcely cheap wickets. Trumper batted 75 minutes for his 67, Armstrong 100 minutes for his 61. W e l l in g t o n . D. Hay, b Crawford G. Howe, c Noble, b Laver.. W. A. Baker, b Crawford .. W. R. L. At the Oval, April 29 and 30. With the first match of importance there came a change in the weather, and we stepped straight from what might have been mid-June to March or October. But there was evidence at Kennington that men had profited by the long succession of bright days; they had got fairly unlimbered, and, bleak as were the surroundings, the play gave little evidence of the fact that the season was only just beginning. Fender, of Sussex, turned out somewhat unexpectedly for Surrey, the county of his birth ; that staunch veteran, A. W. F. Rutty, tireless in the cause of Surrey cricket, captained one side, and Julian Piggott, who many think should have had his blue at Cambridge, the other. William Abel, back from the Argentine, appeared and did well; but Harrison, who has been coaching in South Africa, stood down for Fender. To describe in detail a match which was essentially a shoulder-opener is unnecessary. Suffice it to say that John Howell, of Repton, Hayes, Goatly, Tom Hayward (is this really to be his last season ?), John Hobbs, Abel, Ducat, and Myers all made plenty of runs, and in most cases made them really well, and that J. H. Lockton (Dulwich and Honor Oak, also of Notts Forest footer fame), who has a most curious zigzag run, earned approval as a bowler. The two days’ cricket produced 1064 runs, three centuries, and (though these do not appear on the score) plenty of stinging concussions between the ball and hands numbed by the cold and possibly soft after the winter. The fieldsman’s job is no joke with the temperature in the neighbourhood of 40°. M r . A. W. F. R u t t y ’s S id e . First Innings. L. A. Cody, c Grimmett, b Brice C. McKenzie, run out C. E. A stand of 72 for the sixth wicket by Hodder and Luxford gave Manawatu a decent total, though they might have been out more cheaply had Crawford been kept on. The Australians ran up another big score. There were partnerships of 68 by Collins and McKenzie, 49by Collins and Waddy, 50 by Collins and Trumper, 74 by Trumper and Armstrong, 72 by Armstrong and Crawford, and 134 by Armstrong and Mailey.
