The home side lacked their captain, Dan Reese, down with tonsilitis, and Whitta, who had an injured hand, in this return match ; and they left out young Wilson, who had done so well in some earlier games. Patrick skippered, and won the toss. The first wicket fell at 1, the second at 8, the third at 13, and the fourth at 40 ; but Sandman and Patrick made a determined stand, and added 107 in 68 minutes. The rest all made a few, but there was no long partnership after Patrick’s departure. At call of time Waddy and Collins had sent up 54 unparted ; but the former left early next morning, and his partner was the only man who did much. Bennett, as in the match at Dunedin, bowled wonderfully steadily and well, and is evidently not a spent force yet. Patrick did some big hitting in Canterbury’s second, one ball from Armstrong being lifted clean over the heads of the crowd in the square- leg direction ; but he did not stay very long. Limited to two days, the game was drawn. The takings—which go to the Canterbury C.A. and the Canterbury R.U.—amounted to £238. C a n t e r b u r y . First Innings. F. Woods, b Crawford E. R. The days when Nelson used to hold its own with Wellington are past, and of late the little province has not shown up much in the cricket line. This game began on a sodden wicket, and the local men were sent in first bv the Australian captain. Saxon and Knapp made quite a stand for the third wicket; but after wards no one could do anything with Laver. The Australians were 26 for o at call of time, carried their score to 172 next morning, put out the XV for 35, and won by 10 wickets. N e ls o n XV. First Innings.
